Jared was lucky to have been allowed a leave for the holidays. Of course, he'd gotten done with boot camp for a while now, and at this point his schedule wasn't quite as intense or restrictive, but still, new kids were always less likely to get the time off during the holiday. Some other guys, who hadn't been so lucky, had tried to insinuate it had something to do with his dad being a high ranking in the military, but that didn't affect him in the slightest because for one thing, half of these guys' fathers or mothers were also in the military, and for another thing, his dad had always been based on the east coast, whereas he was in the midwest area of the country, so there was really nothing of relevance in those statements. As it was, he didn't know if his dad even took time off during the holiday season, except for Christmas day itself or else his mother would kill him. He would be headed over to Newport in about a week, but he'd decided to stop by Kansas City first to meet up with a few friends before they went on home themselves, especially Gabe since the other guy generally left right after school let out since he had such a long plane ride ahead, and didn't really get to visit home much during the rest of the year.
He'd booked himself a hotel room during his stay in Kansas City, knowing a few of his friends would probably not have had a problem with having him over, but most of them were couples and he didn't want to intrude on personal time, not to mention feel like a third wheel. Then again, he could see the appeal with Ruth and Via, but that was beside the point. And then, with his military discount, it really didn't bother him to stay at a hotel for a few days - if anything, he had a lot more amenities there than anywhere else, including a pool and a gym, and since he needed to stay in shape, that would be a good thing. He wouldn't see anyone until the next morning though, so he'd decided to go spend a bit of time out and around the city for his first evening back, putting on his civilian clothes but wearing his tags around his neck. It was a bit ironic to think of how he'd ended up in the military, after so many years of telling his father he would never want to follow his footsteps and being threatened with military school. In the end though, he'd figured it would be a good career choice for him, especially since he wasn't really sure what else he wanted to do.
