PERSONALITY
Nick was raised to be a hard working Southern gentleman. Despite the fact that he comes from a family of old money he's always had to work for what he has and has had a job as soon as he could work. He knows the value of a dollar because he's always had to work to get every dollar, what he did with the money from there was his own choice but he has learned a lot not to spend money foolishly. His work ethic goes past the jobs that he's getting paid for and into everything that he does, especially things with other people as he has already come to know that it is that extra effort people put in that gets noticed and is appreciated. And while he doesn't do anything just for the glory of it, he does find it rewarding to be able to know that he's done everything that he can. He lives by the motto that he'll do his best or not do it all and the second option isn't even a choice that he was taught to acknowledge when he was growing up.
Although he isn't particularly religious Nick goes to church every Sunday, as he has since he was a baby. He does believe in God and has a pretty solid moral compass, but that isn't the reason that he goes each week. He goes because he wants to be able to get involved with the mission trips that churches take to help other people, since helping other people is his favorite thing to do. Most of the free time that he has that isn't spent writing is spent helping at least one other person in some way or another. Volunteering is just something that he loves to do and tries to do so every time that he gets an opportunity presented to him or when he can find the time to do something. It gives him a sense of accomplishment at the end of the day to know that he's helped out someone who really needed it.
However, he does know when to put himself first too. Getting walked all over isn't anything that's going to happen to him anytime soon, since when someone is trying to take advantage of him he knows how to step away from a situation fast. And when someone is taking advantage of anyone else he isn't afraid to call them out on it either. Selfish people are pretty much the worst kind in his book and they are the type he can't find himself relating to in any way. His patience, which seems never ending for those in need, is quickly spent with everyone else and he does happen to have a quite a temper on him as well. Mostly he tries to take that temper and take it out constructively, maybe doing a bit of writing or playing some basketball or anything else that isn't blowing up on the person he's mad at but he's far from perfect and it's happened more than once that he's gone off on someone that he has been upset with. Most of the time he's pretty quick at apologizing though, especially if he knows that the person didn't do anything to really deserve it.
APPEARANCE
Nick usually doesn't even have a negative thought about how he looks, finding himself pretty content with what he's been given naturally. With blonde hair, blue eyes, a wide straight smile and dimples to complete the picture he feels pretty confident when he looks into the mirror most mornings. Of course he still has the normal teenage problems of zits and stuff to worry about from time to time but most of the time he's pretty lucky to manage a relatively clear complexion. Standing at 5'10" he isn't all that tall, nor does he have that much of an athletic build but with everything else he doesn't complain about those things too much. If anything he just hopes that he'll keep growing, since he feels find with the build that he has.
Most things in his closet aren't that nice of clothes; he owns a lot of jeans and t-shirts that he doesn't mind getting a bit dirty. The time he spends picking out his clothes most mornings is less than three minutes, just throwing on whatever he can find first that's clean. Probably the only exception to that rule is on Sundays where he takes the time to try and find something that will look a bit nicer for church, because he grew up being told that it was practically a sin to wear jeans to church and it's a habit that he has just kept with him ever since. His hair is easily taken care of each morning by just running a hand through it and trying to put order to it the best that he can in that fashion.
HISTORY
On October 5th, 1994 Nicholas Xander Upton was born to parents Destiny and Dallas Upton in Fulton, Mississippi. He was the sixth and final child to be born to the couple, already having three girls and two boys. The oldest, Chloe, was ten by the time he was born and the youngest, Ellie, was three while all of his other siblings were in between the two, Miles (nine), Abraham (seven), and Charlotte (five). They grew up in a large enough house that each of them would be able to have their own rooms and space to express themselves, something that Nick's siblings were even more thankful for with the new addition of another crying baby. For the most part though, they all looked after their younger brother and took great pride in him, Chloe even wanting to bring him in for show and tell once. The kids grew up very close to one another with minimal fighting between them, probably because bickering wasn't exactly something that Dallas allowed in his household and the few times that they did decide to do so they landed themselves into loads of trouble.
Plus, there were certain other family activities that they each had to be involved with together on a weekly basis. Everyone was required to go to church each Sunday together, they had a family game night where everyone would play games together as much as possible - of course when Ellie and Nick were younger they would usually play a game a little different than everyone else - and every meal severed at the house was a family meal and any problems couldn't be brought to meal time, instead they had to be solved afterward between whoever they were for and more than a few times they had to resort to solving problems with everyone around the table once the food was cleared, since not all of them could get along perfectly at all times. The system worked pretty well too, probably because the alternative was being stuck on extra chore duty with the person in conflict for the next week.
From a young age Nick always proved to have a huge imagination, being able to make up his own bedtime stories and tell them to his mom instead of the other way around. He was constantly thinking of far off lands and the people within them. While sitting around campfires in the summer he was always willing to volunteer to tell some story of his imagination. As he got to the point where he'd be able to, all the members of his family started suggesting that he write down the amazing stories he came up with and he did so with his stories starting to grow more complicated and more complete as he started to go back and revise them and add to them. Writing became the thing to fill up any free time that he had, always working to complete one story or another. Once he finished it he'd have others read it and see if there was anything he had to change yet and sometimes he'd end up with three or four different endings just because he couldn't seem to find one that worked the best.
As he grew older and took more classes in school that would help him with his writing he began to seriously consider applying for a school that would be able to help him get even better with his writing. He looked up several schools that he thought to be interesting, taking them to his parents and presenting them as options. He knew that they had the money to be able to send him there without a problem so he wasn't worried about that, it would just be trying to prove to them that it would be the right choice for him to go to some art academy for high school that was more than a couple hundred miles away. His parents agreed to it on the condition that he prove that he could work hard enough to get into an academy. That part wasn't so hard, since he'd already had pretty great grades to begin with and had always worked to do his best. It than became a process of being able to narrow it down to what school would be best, they compared things such as price and the quality of the teachers and in the end it was decided that Gordon Parks' would be the best fit, so he sent away an application along with some samples of his writing. He had to wait for weeks to hear back from the school before he finally got his letter of acceptance and packed his bags for Kansas City.
