One of the things Emmy missed the most from home at the Academy, aside from her family, was the kitchen. She didn't miss her bed too badly - sure, the twin sized bed at the Academy was smaller than the full size one she had back home, but it was still comfortable. She didn't mind having a roommate seeing as she was used to sharing her room with her sister, and actually, her current roommate was sometimes easier to get along with in terms of how clean they wanted to keep their room, so there was at least that. But one of the things she enjoyed doing the most at home was cooking and baking. Her mother had been working at a local bakery since before her birth, and she was now one of the best cake decorators they had. As a kid, she'd always demonstrated a lot of interest toward what her mother did, and she'd always loved going into work with her, watching and learning from her. She'd developped some skills herself, though she was far from being good enough to do anything one might want to sell, but she'd always considered it to be a back up plan in case her idea of a singing career fell through. It was her dream to sing professionally, but she knew she also needed to be responsible and think of something she might do if it didn't go according to plan.
At the end of the day, though it wouldn't be her dream career, she didn't think she would ever mind going into work if that ended up being her job for the rest of her life. But she still needed practice, and it was harder to get that away from home. That was why she'd decided to sign up for cake decorating classes - it seemed a bit silly to pay for something she could do for free back home, but she wanted to learn, and this had seemed like the better option. She'd gotten her classes set up and had started them before Christmas break - now that she was back in Kansas City, she had resumed them. Today had been her first class dealing with fondant, which hadn't gone quite as well as hoped for, but she didn't let herself get discouraged. She still had a few smudges of powdered sugar and food colorant on her cheek and jeans as she packed up her decorated cupcakes and put her coat and hat back on to make her way back to the Academy. Her friends also enjoyed her taking these classes, as they always got to enjoy the goodies she brought back - unfortunately, it would appear that they wouldn't have such luck this time around. She had just stepped out on the sidewalk when her foot caught in a crack in the cement and the box of cupcakes went flying in the air as she fell down on the ground with a light squeal.
