"Argh!" Cara said, as she tripped over her welcome mat and all of her groceries spilled over over the kitchen floor. Well, that was graceful. Cara listened carefully for footsteps, but thankfully did not hear any and that meant that Joel wasn't home yet. At least that meant that he couldn't make fun of her. The thought that not three hours ago Cara was teaching her own dance students how to stand on their toes made her laugh. So... she could do that but she couldn't carry in five grocery bags? Typical. Oh well, there was just something about being on the dance floor that made Cara lose all of her clumsiness. As she started to stand up, she heard her iPhone ring. A small smile appeared on her lips when she saw that it was her mother. She answered it happily, and asked her mother about her Thanksgiving plans. It did not shock Cara in the least to hear her mother say that she was going out to eat. They did that every year for a couple of reasons. The first reason was because all of the girls in the house are vegetarians and Mrs. Jessica Donovan-McCain doesn't see the point of buying a bunch of food that only her husband is going to eat. The second reason is because no one in the Donovan family knows how to cook- a fact that had slipped Cara's mind. On the Holidays, the family always lets their cook have the day off to be with his family.
As Cara was putting away some of the groceries that she had dropped on the ground, her mother asked what she was doing. When Cara said that she was putting the Thanksgiving groceries away, she heard her mother laugh and say, "But Cara... you can't cook!" Suddenly, all of the color drained out of Cara's face and she looked really sick. She glanced around at everything she had just bought, and all of it was things you had to cook. "Crap," Cara heard herself say. Why had she thought that buying all that food was a good idea? Why didn't someone remind her that she can't even make tea without it exploding out of the tea pot? "I have to go," she told her mother, and hung up her phone. She left the remainder of the groceries on the floor and went into the bedroom and sat on the bed. She wanted to make this Thanksgiving special with Joel, but now it just kind of seemed silly. She basically set herself up to fail. Cara could feel tears slipping out of her eyes. What was she going to do?
