It was a late Saturday night most of the students were out partying or asleep and so the theater was empty and dark. The massive room echoed with every movement made in it. The chairs sat in empty audience to the stage, the single light that illuminated fell on a long figure sitting with her legs crossed in the very middle of the stage. The girl sitting there wore a long sleeved white T-shirt, a pair of dark jeans and her shoes lay on the floor beside her. Her hair fell over her face in a dark blond mask and clutched in her hands was a worn black guitar.
The song she sang was gentle the chords she played on the guitar echoed through the room reverberating from wall to wall, from empty chair to empty chair and up to the ceiling. The words flowed with the chords as the girl sang in Russian her voice rising and falling like gentle ripples.
It was a sad song, Nakia had heard it a long time ago from her teacher back home. "A song of loneliness," he had said. "A song to play when the dark that surrounds you has become you." And indeed it had. Nakia had left home two weeks ago, had been at Gordon for only four days and already was starting to wonder why she had come. Her dad had needed her, she was sure of that. She hadn't really made that many friends yet, as a matter of fact hadn't really made any friends yet. Her music lessons were all that kept her going now. She had already learned more then she thought was possible and couldn't imagine how much she could learn in a year. She just hoped that she could last that long. She was lonely and scared and homesick and all she wanted to do right now was to sit and play and remember home. Tears slipped from her eyes, slowly running down her cheeks as she sang.
The dark that is you
Will only be for a time,
As evening gives way to night,
So night must give in to dawn.
