Chloe walked along the outside rim of the lake and listened to music through her iPod. She sang along a little, but her voice wasn't anything special and instantly felt embarrassed by it. She stopped and checked that no one was looking. She felt reassured that her dignity was in check as she saw that no one was close by enough to have heard her singing. She pocketed the iPod and continued to listen to the music, letting it take over her mind as she walked along. It was a little cold outside, but nothing that she couldn't handle. Even though she didn't look it, she was tougher than most people thought. The perfect blond princess on the outside, but with a hard center. She watched the lake, at the light bouncing off of the water as it moved in small ripples. Chloe smiled. She loved being out, away from it all. She folded her arms and settled down on a bench just away from the lake. No way was she getting her new jeans dirty. As much as she liked the sunshine and all that, her and dirt just didn't mix.
She pulled out her phone from her bag and flicked through her texts. None were that recent, as many of the people who she had considered her friends in her old life had seemed to just forget about her entire existence. She felt a little bit of annoyance dart through her heart but settled it by angrily deleting any of her older texts from them and even considered deleting their contact numbers. But she didn't. She couldn't bring herself to completely forget about them, even if they had her. Instead she looked through her photos, of her and them, and even her with a boy her age. Another stab at her heart. She almost forgotten about him, in this new world. But there he was, the cheating little man who had left her bitter. His face smiled back at her, almost teasing her as she sat, feeling more alone that ever, looking down at the photo. It seemed like a million years ago that anything had happened in her past, but when she was alone, it all came rushing back to her. And it wasn't something she enjoyed. She couldn't seem to bring herself to look away from the photo, where she was smiling herself, blissfully unaware of what was going to happen. She jumped slightly as she heard a noise beside her, and snapped her head round to look at the source of the sound.
