Jan was not a particularly happy camper. It was one thing to allow Vincent’s girlfriend to visit, but an entirely different thing to allow Val’s boyfriend to stay over. What had Tillie been thinking in agreeing to that? Jan didn’t know, and well personally, he didn’t care. Fuming as he was, he barely heard his brother on the other end of the phone rattling on about Maxine’s newest blunder.
”Janco, are you listening to me?” Ari said. ”Val’s a smart girl. Trust her, dork.”
“I do trust her,” he said warily. “It’s her boyfriend I don’t trust. Boyfriend. Damn it, how the hell did that happen? I thought I had made it clear. No dating.”
”Alright, look, just don’t do something stupid. I gotta go and stop Maxine from trying to kill her brothers.
Jan hung up with a low chuckle. It definitely had to be said that Valerie was definitely the lesser of two evils when it came to the Freeman clan. Or maybe three. He supposed that would depend on the time of month. Shaking his head he left the kitchen and made his way straight to his statue room. As soon as he opened the door, he found it was occupied despite the fact that it shouldn’t be.
His two youngest daughters were standing inside looking at his more recent projects, some of which were yet to be finished. Clearing his throat, he stepped out of the doorway and wordlessly pointed out into the hall. It didn’t take a genius to know who was the mastermind behind the in-house field trip. It was the same culprit in most trouble-making schemes where Valerie wasn’t involved. Besides Gemma was wearing that grin on her face. The Freeman shit-eating smirk that said it all as she pushed her sister out of the room.
Shaking his head, he closed the door behind the girls and settled at his worktable. He some time before the guests arrived and drama ensued. He might as well start off the introductions as calm and collected as possible. That was where the statue carving came in. Lifting up one of his partially finished miniature statues, he got to work in finishing. It wasn’t quite one of his usual pieces, something different. Usually Jan stuck with animals, but very recently he had been inspired to do something different. The statue in his hand was his first attempt. He actually liked it so far.
