Ayla felt particularly tired and downbeat as she drove home after work, the rain beating down on the windshield, mentally cursing at the throbbing sensations in her temples which had lasted practically the entire evening. One would think that working the night shift in a store that was open twenty four hours a day would guarantee her a bit of quiet and peace, but no, apparently some of the worse customers decided to show up at midnight. There had been one in particular today which had decided she felt like blaming her general life problems on someone, and since she'd been standing here, she'd had to just take it all and not say a word, ignoring the urge to grab the nearest heavy, sharp object and throw it at her head. At moments like those though, she just thought about Shawn, about how she had to do this for him because she wanted him to have a good life. Only two years from now, Jared would graduate college and move onto his firefighter training, and the only relief she found in that was that then, she'd be able to try and find herself a career of her own with a better salary and better hours.
Tonight though, it was a bit harder to think of that. Right now, the only thoughts crossing her mind were about her raging headache, her the pain she felt in her back and feet, how dreadfully sleepy she was, how uninteresting and unattractive she felt with the dark circles under her eyes, the wet messiness of her hair and the baggy clothes that made her look like she'd gained ten pounds. She sat in the car in silence after parking it, enjoying nonetheless the few minutes of quiet she was allowing herself to have, sighing as she forced herself to step out in the pouring rain and hurrying to the door of the building, getting inside and heading over to her and Jared's apartment, frowning at the faint sound she heard coming from inside, opening the door only to realize Shawn was crying, and from the lack of light in either bedroom, she assumed Jared was soundly sleeping. She repressed the bubbling anger and exhaustion as she walked over to the nursery, getting rid of her damp coat and taking him in her arms with soothing whispers, knowing it wasn't a hunger cry and so figuring he might have had a nightmare. The thought of how long he might have been crying was just too much for her though, marching over to their bedroom with her son still crying in her arms, shaking Jared to wake him a bit more roughly than she'd intended.
