Nate couldn't even begin to understand why it had taken him so long to wake up. He figured it could easily be blamed on the fact that the past couple of weeks had been pretty rough on him, but really, that was no excuse. And while he'd been talking to Will, he'd made up his mind. It wasn't so much that the other guy had said anything specific that had made him realize what he was - or more like wasn't - doing, but there was just something in the midst of their conversation that had clicked in his mind. And he'd decided that he refused. He refused to let Felicia break up with him, and he wasn't gonna let it happen. She had no right to say that this was for his own good and then leave him broken. It didn't matter how much she believed that he would get better and then move on with his life, find a girl who was better for him and so on. He didn't give a shit. He wasn't gonna move on, and he wasn't gonna find a better girl. For the better part of two years, he'd shared his life with her. He'd grown to love her and respect her, and he'd made plans for them. He wanted her to be in his future, and if she didn't want to be because she didn't want to be with him, then fine, but goddamn it he wasn't gonna let her pick for him.
There was a lot of anger in him at the thought of it, but he wasn't angry with her. He couldn't be - nothing she did could make him hate her or feel anything remotely negative about her. But he was angry with himself, that he'd somehow let this happen. She was the girl he was gonna marry - no maybe, no possibly - and he had the ring to prove it, had had it for almost a month now. And he'd felt quite sure with himself that whenever he did pop the question, she would say yes. So how could he have even thought for a minute that he could only give up? That there was nothing he could do to change her mind? How could he have been so stupid, he had no clue. But today he would be making amends, starting with telling her that he was not letting her go, and she'd just have to deal with that. He'd driven over to the Academy, getting out and quickly heading toward the girls' dorm building. It was a good thing that no one was there to stop him from getting in, because he wouldn't have let them, and he didn't let the door to her dorm stop him either, not even knocking and just opening it and stepping in. He didn't care if her roommate was in - explanations could wait.
