Nate had admittedly raked his brains quite a bit to try and figure out how to propose to Felicia. He knew she wouldn't hesitate to say no if she thought his proposal was lacking in efforts, or if it was too weird or cheesy. That had discarted the idea of proposing to her during a romantic dinner, on their anniversary, Christmas, her birthday or any other special occasion like that, because she would either deem it an easy way out or corny. He knew a lot of people would say she was being ridiculous if he shared that information wtih them - Holly, for example - but he actually didn't mind it. Felicia challenged him in some ways he knew no other girl would have, and he enjoyed it. That was one of the thing he'd always told his friends he was looking for in a girl. Not a doormat who would just agree with everything he said, never share a different opinion, never call him out on some bullshit he might say. And Felicia was the complete opposite of that, and that was part of the reason why he'd fallen in love with her. She wasn't a carbon copy of anyone else - she was herself, fully and entirely.
Granted though, in this type of a situation he wouldn't have totally hated her being a bit more like other girls and just gush over the fact that her boyfriend wanted to marry her, no matter how he asked her to do it. And in the end, he didn't want to do a proposal that wouldn't be like him, either. He wanted his way of asking her to marry him to make her happy, but he also wanted it to resemble him. He didn't want it to be so meticulously calculated and planned and extravagant that it would be too far from the kind of guy he was. He was a simple guy, and Felicia knew that. And the ring had been hidden for too long - it was time he took it out. That decision made, he was able to come up with an idea he hoped would be good enough for her. He planned the evening mostly the same way he would have any other night, not wanting to give too many indications of what he had in mind. Fridays were their quiet evening, when they didn't think about work or school or assignments or anything stressful that they might have to face the next day. He'd started on dinner already, taking a bit more time on it than he might normally have as he made everything from scratch that he could, waiting for her to get here from the Academy.
