The Chatters
Editor's Note
Editor's Note
Well it's time already for the third issue of The Chatters. All of our staff worked extremely hard to put this paper together as always and it's always nice to let them know that their work is appreciated. Also, I'm glad to hear that a lot of people did go out and vote to represent our country so good for all of you as well.
So without anything more, we'll get straight to it.

It is often said that, as things change, they stay the same. And fashion is one thing that rarely leaves us for very long - in the last few years, some aspects from the 70s and 80s have made a comeback in our stores, mostly for the cuts, designs and colors. Though, thank God that hasn't happened yet for the 90s. This Fall, however, we go even further back - the fashion trend for the Fall season of 2008 comes from Russian Royalty, going back to the beginning of the last century. Last seasons' colorful trends turn a bit more somber and are replaced by darker tones that offer a certain look of class and elegance, as long as it fits obviously.
The new trend that emerged is described as a very powerful style statement - the Cossak hats and Soviet Style coats and suits, including some outfits that seem inspired by Russian Dolls, offering short double breasted jackets and pencil skirts. Shapeless, yet stylish coats, and polo necks along with wide pants will also be some articles that will easily be found in stores this season.
Soft, rich velvets will also be available, mostly found in simple, knee-lenght plain skirts, and all those who have always hopped to look like a muppet will also be served with the shaggy furs look in the jackets and coats department, along with shaggy-dog-like fringers that appear on everything from dresses and bags to shoes and coats. Fond of your old suede furry boots? Well, put them aside, because this fall, the riding boots are making a comeback with the chic equestrian look.
The color range, far from being bright, will do nothing to make you stand out of the crowd. I'd actually advice to stay in at light, or wear a fluorescent light on your back for your own safety, as to not being hit by cars which might not see you. Black softened with grays and beiges, muddy and warm browns, inky blue and dark purples to offer a monastic monochrome look.
Finally, even though some styles are making their appearance only this fall, some others are apparently here to stay. The Maxi skirt, for example, which emerged in early 2007, is still in vogue thorough buyer's hearts, especially those with low budgets. And the 70s statements are far from being over with their wide pants, turnups, flares and pleats.
A last advice for those who, like me, don't always have the money to acquire the latest fashion out there - thrift stores are always a very good option, especially when seeking more vintage clothes. The prices are low, and the clothes they sell do tend to be very good quality, and clean, in spite of some people's fast way of judging those kind of places. You can find several of those in the city, and keep your budget low while getting several articles of very good taste. Have fun shopping!

In honor of World Kindness Day [13th of November] and World Hello Day [21st of November] I bring you my theme for the month – okay so maybe I actually picked the sport before I knew that these days existed in the month of November…sue me. WORLD SPORTS!! This issue’s sport comes from the good ol’ French. A long, long time ago -1907 precisely – in La Ciota, in Provence – southern France – the simple sport was created. Simply explained, there’s a wooden ball –called the jack– that is the target, and the objective is to throw your metal balls as close to the wooden one as possible, without actually hitting it. And if that sounds too simple, try throwing it from the inside of a circle with the circumference of 13 cm, while keeping both feet planted firmly on the ground. Not so simple now, huh? The order is simple, the person who throws the jack, starts play by throwing a boule (the metal ball), and then it alternates between teams. First player on the red team, the second on the green team, third on red…green…red…and so on. The game is always played with even numbers to the maximum of six. So two, four and six players. For the first two –singles and doubles– players have three boules, and for the triples, they only have two. If boules thrown from opposite teams are equidistant from the jack, then play continues until one team succeeds at being closest to the jack. After the game ends, play can continue with someone from the winning team drawing a circle around the jack and then picking up from there by standing in said circle and throwing the jack once more.
Points are scored at the end of a round, basically when players run out of boules. The winners are decided by whoever has more boules near the jack, and points are scored by counting each boule closer to the jack than the other team’s. Void the end of the game if the jack is knocked out of play while teams still have boules, and if one team has boules and the other does not, count each boule they have and add a matching point to the score. The game completely ends when one team reaches thirteen points. Basically, this article was to show how different the world can be when playing from different countries. Sure, we have basketball and soccer, which are both played internationally, but even still we play differently. Boules and basketball and baseball have differences, noticeable differences (i.e. the different names of the equipment, the sizes and use of extra equipment not needed for other sports, how you throw them…etc…), but they’re also one in the same(i.e. all require balls to play, each have a goal in mind –scoring– , each requires throwing and skill…etc…). This is in hopes that you’ll try something new, something foreign. And okay sure, even pétanque might seem a bit farfetched, but what’s stopping you from trying other things that might be a bit more simple? Nothing.

Ballroom dancing tends to be looked at from a rather negative point of view, when you don't necessarily know all there is to know about it - most people actually see it a bit as line dancing, and so an activity to be done merely by older people. Truth is, the activity of young people joining in classes of ballroom dancing keep increasing, whether it is to have fun or to keep yourself in good shape. And on top of being healthy, like any other sport, it also offers a variety of different dances for you to learn if you are not certain which you'd rather try out. There are some smoother, slower dances, and also a great number of them for those who seek something with a bit more rhythm. The types of dances differ from one country to another, as there are American ballroom dances and International ballroom dances. I will concentrate this article more on International dances, which are usually those you will find in big competitions.
There are a few things that are usually needed when you try out ballroom dancing, especially when planning to try for a more professional experience. It is important to say that, though obviously, the younger you start, the better it is, it's not the type of dance that you have no chance in succeeding in if you haven't started from the moment you were six years old. Obviously, rare are the people who can actually make a life out of it, unless they open their own school, but it is a very nice pass time to have, and a trophee or two has never hurt anyone. But the appearance for ballroom is very important, and that explains why you will rarely see someone wearing jeans and a t-shirt whilst dancing - tails for men and gowns for women are the most commonly seen.
Firstly, the most obvious to most, is waltz. There are more than one types of waltz, and in the International type, there are two; slow waltz and viennese waltz, the latter actually being the most popular in competitions, though the first is quite easier to learn. There is something very beautiful about waltz, and you can easily get lost into it when practicing it, or even watching a couple - the mix of soft music, formal costumes and the grace of the dancers can easily make it magical in the eye of the spectators, and the degree of beauty is often something that most dancers will look for. Tango is also a dance you will find in the International Standart style of ballroom dancing. It is a bit more intimate as a style of dancing, as it is supposed to mostly represent passion, love, all strong emotions that need to be easily seen through the dancing style of the two partners. Finally, the slow Foxtrot and the Quickstep are the dances that close up the standart styles of international ballroom dancing, two dances that evolved mostly in the early 20s.
Aside from the International Standart style, there is also the International Latin style. The Jive, which could be considered as a form of swing dance and a variation of the jitterbug, started in the early 40s and was introduced to America by African-Americans. It is considered as a very happy and boppy dance, though it was one of the last to join the list of dances eligible to international competitions. Then, there is the Paso Doble, double step in Spanish. It's a dance that is mostly based on bull fights that occur from Spain, modelling the sounds, moves and drama of this controversial sport. And then, the last three are probably the most known - the Rumba, the Samba and the Cha-cha-cha. The latter, which is of Cuban origins, is usually the first most dancers will learn, as the basics are quite simple and most people know them without even knowing. The Samba is another very lively, rhythmical dance that comes from Brazil, though a bit more complex, and finally, the Rumba is probably the most interesting of all, also of Afro-Cuban origins - it is a very passionate, sensual type of dancing, sometimes described as the vertical expression of an horizontal wish.
I hope this article will have given you all the desire to dance - if not, it will be my goal in the next edition to attempt yet again. For those of you who might be interested in trying out some lessons (which usually consist of one hour per week, even though for every hour of class it is said that you would need five to six hours of practice), here are some places you can contact, found nearby to the Academy.

Play of the Month
It's time again to pick that play of the month. It is so hard to just pick one. But, there is one that is becoming very popular, that most people end up loving. The play of the month is *drum roll* A Chorus Line! A Chorus Line is a musical that is about these nineteen totally different dancers who typically dance on Broadway. These nineteen people are all trying out for a spot on a Chorus Line. Sadly, they get rid of two dancers right away, leaving them with only seventeen. They will have to be the best singers and dancers in the business in order to do be picked. In the end, the producer, Zach, can only pick four girls and four boys.
Zach has a very interesting way of having them try out for the play. He has them each tell a story about their lives. Their past, present, and future. They have the chance to talk about anything. The first dancer and singer, Mikey, tells a story about how he got into dancing. He lived in a poor family, but his family still was able to let their daughter go to dance classes. Mikey always went along with her, and thought that the moves they were doing were too easy. He would dance right along with them. When his sister got bored of dance classes, Mikey went and took her spot. Another character, Bob, is always making jokes about everything. From his story, we learn that he does that to mask his childhood.
In the mix of people that are trying out and telling their stories, there are a husband and a wife, Al and Kristine. Kristina admits to being tone deaf, and her and husband sing a comical song called 'Sing!' where Kristine starts each song line, and Al finishes the lines for her. And who could forget little Mark? The youngest of all of the dancers. He talks about how he first "became a man" with a certain kind of dream he had one night. There is also one actress there who has a totally different style of acting. Diana was told by her acting coach at school that she would never make it. She felt "Nothing" when doing some basic theater exercises.
After what seems like forever for the seventeen dancers, Zach tells them to go practice a dance and singing combination for the second part of their audition. But, he tells one member to stay on stage, Cassie. You actually kind of forget that she's even there. When Zach talks to Cassie, he uses a different tone all together. We find out that Cassie and Zach were in a relationship a few years ago. Zach tells Cassie straight up that she is way too good for this chorus line. Cassie has to confess that when she went to go become a soloist, she didn’t get any jobs. Also that she is willing to come back to work with Zach…if he’ll let her. After a debate with himself, Zach tells Cassie to go join the others and to send Paul to come and see him.
Zach was upset that he didn’t get to hear anything from Paul, so he wants to talk to him now. Paul tentatively walks on stage, and starts getting questioned by Zach. Paul suddenly comes clean about his past and says that he was in a drag queen act and loved it and could never tell his parents what he was doing. They knew he was doing a show, but they did not know what kind he was up to. One day, his mom and dad wanted to see him before Paul left on tour, and they saw him in his drag queen attire. Paul did not get the reaction from them that he thought he would get. After his heart filled monolog, Zach sends him back down with the other dancers.
When the seventeen learn their routine, Zach calls them back up. Ad they show him, Paul falls and ends up needing to go to the hospital. This makes the other dancers reflect with why they are even their in the first place. After a long wait, Zach comes back and wants to see the number again. The famous musical song “One” plays and the remaining sixteen dance to it. After yelling at the dancers who he doesn’t think are trying their hardest, Zach tells them all to get into a straight line. He calls eight of them up, and tells them that they are dismissed. The four males and the four females that are left are then told by Zach that they are the eight he has chosen.
Now, I don’t want to spoil who gets on it for you…so you’ll just have to go and see it! I will say that I was shocked, and I bet you will be too. This play is “One singular sensation” that you will enjoy! Until next time...

As we speak, I am listening to my “favorites” playlist on my personalized i-pod mini. While I’m sitting here supposed to be working homework at that. How ironic that I should be up to two things so uncommon for me (homework and writing an article for the newspaper- at the request of a good friend who writes monthly for the paper). But music had been and will always be an escape for me, and as with true music lovers, finding new bands to listen to when the elders become redundant or sell-out for big bucks has become a sport for me. And a constant band who’s songs I’ve been downloading frequently, based in Las Vegas, Nevada are The Cab. No, not Death Cab for Cutie who in my opinion are a bunch of pansies. The Cab. Now normally, my preference for music lies in rock, though it’s still eclectic. The cab create an amazing blend of R & B with lead singer Alex Deleon’s amazing vocals, and rock, with the crazy guitar and bass riffs thrown out there by Ian Crawford–no, not related to fellow pansy Chace Crawford – who also does back-up vocals, and Cash Colligan. Banging drums by Alex Johnson can be heard crashing in the background along with killer fingers, piano player Alex Marshall. They’re definitely climbing my list of favorites and deserve recognition. And they’re definitely a band to watch out for.
Another person climbing up my holy…crap, list is Demi Lovato. Her stunt with Disney, like so many other Disney stars was to launch her solo career. Though, I was worried that she’d waste her crazy vocals working for Disney for all of her life, and then she’d be on my wash out list. Though she did the good thing and used Walt Disney –and ultimately Mickey Mouse and co. – to get her own career started. Her, new single ‘Get Back” is currently playing on my i-pod. And as I listen to it, I’m amazed by how she also infuses rock and pop and all that jazz with her sound. Though her voice is mostly rock based, unlike Alex from The Cab. When you watch the video for her song, you’re amazed by it and can’t truly look away. And even her remake of the Disney song “That’s how you know” from the kiddie movie Enchanted is on my i-pod. Simply put she’s someone I’m going to be watching out, though I can see her seling-out since she basically kicked Goofy and pals to the curb. However, I say Good Riddance, because about five seconds through that craptastic movie “Camp Rock” I almost lost my lunch.
And so, in conclusion, check them out. Mackenzie out!

Book Critique
Recently, I’ve been slightly obsessed by the novel Lolita written in 1955 by author Vladimir Nabokov. It was originally written in English and published in Paris, but was re-written in Russian and published in New York. One of the most interesting pieces of work I’ve ever had the pleasure of reading. The reading is about a man who becomes obsessed with the daughter of his landlord. In need of a place to stay, but unhappy with living at that home, he spots the 12-year-old girl sunbathing, which instantly changes his mind and he takes the home simply because he’s attracted to the small child. Yet, I find the main protagonist and narrator, Humbert Humbert oddly human. In the book, it is noted that his obsession with Dolores –the small girl– is stemmed from the premature death of a girl he used to fancy. While living at the home of Charlotte Haze, Dolores’s (Lolita}mother, Humber becomes the object of Charlottes affection and she gives him the ultimatum of marrying her or moving out. He had no physical or emotional attraction to Haze, though saw moving out as a threat to his obsession with the young daughter and decides to marry Charlotte Haze. After a series of events leading up to the mother finding out about Humbert’s motives for her daughter, she is embarrassed and flees to post the notes but is halted in her efforts to do so. But I won’t spoil that for you. Eventually, Humbert gains his papers back and he burns them and drives to the camp Lolita attends to pick her up. And he explains that her mother is ill and proceeds in taking her to a hotel. There he meets Clare Quilty, a very odd man who knows Humbert. Humbert has no recollection of the man.
He gains sleeping pills with the intention of using them on Lolita to have unconsensual sex with her, but they have the opposite effect and she instead seduces him and this is the first noted time that they do the deed. After leaving the hotel, Lolita accepts Humbert into his life and drives around the country in her mother’s car. They become nomadic, living in motels from state to state, and Humbert uses inducements to garner sexual favors from her. Though, he falls in love with her knowing that she is in no way attracted to him. It turns out that she’s just an ordinary teenager, and only puts up with him because she has no one else to go to, and she uses him sexually when she wants something. Eventually they settle down in Beardsley. However, after an argument the two pick up and leave driving towards the west all the while followed by Clare Quilty, his intentions and occupations are revealed in the book, all of which I will not spoil, along with his motives for the tail. Lolita falls ill and while supposedly recuperating in a nearby hospital, checks out and disappears. After this, Humbert has a fling with an alcoholic who’s body is a passable alternate of Lolita’s physical attributes. The reason behind that is so blatantly obvious that an explanation is just not necessary.
And here is where I stop. I know, I know. Maybe stopping here was a bit spiteful and probably annoying, but I have my reasons. I’ve already spoiled enough for you, and this is in hopes that you’ll pick up a classic novel and read it until you understand the meaning behind this tragicomedy. Humbert, while obviously a tad bit disturbing for his obsession with a 12-year-old girl (he’s 35 at the time), makes the book hilarious at times with his use of double entendres and his clever rhetorical excursions. He also coins a few words that have become apart of dictionaries world-wide. There has been critical output condemning the book for it’s controversial topic, saying that it’s a form of pedophilia. I happen to believe that it isn’t. Throughout the book, Humber feels remorse for having been attracted to the girl and feels horrible for robbing her of her childhood. Though he truly didn’t, Lolita wasn’t a child anymore by the time they had their first sexual encounter, and she often seduced him. So at often times it can be mistaken as the corruption of a child, though, throughout the book, Lolita does a bit of corruption and deceit herself. It may sound a bit too much for your taste, but throughout the book you become accepting of his motives mainly because of the fact that they are genuinely feelings of affections. So all-in-all, who’s to blame? Pick up a copy from the library, take a seat somewhere quiet )you may need to prepare a snack because this book is captivating) and comfortable, and find out for yourself. I guarantee it’ll have your mind swimming with disturbing yet simply plausible thoughts.

Interview of the Month
Interview time! For this month's interview I decided to interview my own girlfriend and fellow staff member, Taylor Smith about her dance column in the paper.
Interviewer: So Taylor, how does it feel to have your own dance article in the paper?
Taylor: Well, I'm glad that what I write is enough to entertain and interest people. It feels nice I guess I'd say
Interviewer: How'd you manage to get the job if you don't mind me asking? Was there a lot of other people trying to write the column?
Taylor: I don't actually know, I just got a letter at the beginning of the year telling me I'd been suggested for the paper's column and accepted. I guess maybe one of the professor went ahead and did that.
Interviewer: Ahh, so there's a professor out there who obviously likes you, any guesses who?
Taylor: I don't really know, but I suppose they'd have had to rely more on my writing skills, though they aren't that great, than my dancing ones.
Interviewer: Taylor, Taylor, Taylor. Your writing skills are fine, don't diss on yourself.
Taylor: I manage, but I'm being realistic. I know my writing skills aren't the best out there
Interviewer: It's a school paper... honestly I doubt that our editor cares that much about the style of writing but more with the content in the writing and that it's factual. You know Evelynne, facts are more important than creativity.
Taylor: Well I suppose my knowledge for dance might have helped along the way
Interviewer: Question, do you ever get tired of being modest? Because I haven't heard anyone say anything bad about your column, and trust me people do say stuff about some of the other ones.
Taylor: I don't like to brag, but I don't think I'm being overly modest either.
Interviewer: I think you should brag, right now so that it will be recorded for all of history to know about. Everyone brags from time to time anyway. I'm prone to it sometimes.
Taylor: Well, some people brag more than they need, I'm just balancing things out I guess.
Interviewer: I suppose that's a way of looking at things, though I still want to hear brag about something sometime. Anyway, how do you pick what you write about? Do you have a system?
Taylor: I usually just try and pick out something that I think will be interesting, something that I'll get enough information about when I do research
Interviewer: When do you start writing your columns? Do you do things last minute like I do?
Taylor: What do you think Milo?
Interviewer: That there are a lot better things that we could be doing right now...
Taylor: ...I wasn't referring to your general train of thoughts.
Interviewer: You aren't disagreeing though, so I think I'm going to end this interview. Anything else you wanna say?
Taylor: That I wish you'd leave this part out of it?
Interviewer: I'll think about it... anyway, Thanks for your time Taylor
Taylor: Not like I had much choice
Interviewer: Of course you did
Taylor: Well you didn't mention it when you invited me over
Interviewer: Don't make me look like a bad guy in my own column! Anyway, this interview is officially over now.
Movie Critique
This year, we have heard of two very expected movies coming to our theaters in the fall, even though one of them have been pushed back to summer after all. A lot of people are saying these two very movies will even be competing with one another, because in their basic aspect, there are quite a few similarities between the two. You might have guessed the two movies I am talking of - Twilight and Harry Potter. Now, this article will not be a critique of either, obviously, seeing as the latter has not come out yet, nor will it for another few months, and I have not seen the other either, though I do plan to - I'm not going to put myself out there and criticize a movie that has deadly fans.
Both movies are adaptation from very highly praised books. J.K. Rowlings made her mark in the world of children at heart, from young to old, with her universe of fantasy, sparkly spells and magic wands. Best sellers, prizes, and a bit of controverse too, there are not many people on the earth who have yet not heard of that series of books. But it was most definitely a surprise to see yet another series climb up to a status close to the one of J.K.R.'s universe, yet Stephenie Meyer has achieve something by causing a wide range of several generations to get addicted to yet another fantasy world, and yet another bunch of girls to fall in love with literary characters.
The Harry Potter cinematographic debuts increased the books sale by actually quite a lot - people started finding more and more interest in the story after watching the movies, and it is to be wondered if the effect on the Twilight series will be the same. The expectation surely has been growing more and more every since it was confirmed that the rights had been bought, from actors revelations to official photos showing up. Some people were found to be very pleased by the choices, other screamed out their disapproval, but even then, it hasn't changed the amount of time the biggest fans have spent stalking and seeking out every new tidbits of information that have came out for the movie. And it was definitely a good news for a lot of people when it was announced that the release date would be earlier than planned.
The same can't be said for Harry Potter fans, however, when the release date of that one was actually pushed back. A lot of those who claimed that the Harry Potter and Twilight movies would be up against each other found that as Harry Potter's admitted defeats, but we have yet to compare the numbers, so stay tuned for both appearances on the big screen. Twilight has already came out in America, on the 21st of this month, and Harry Potter will be coming out as a big summer movie on July 17th.

Recipe of the Month
Christmas is coming closer, and many of you are probably already racking their brains as to what present they will get to their loved ones, how you will dress up, and all other kind of details like that.
And so today, I am giving you a recipe to help you relax a bit with a good book with a whole lot of Christmassy flavor, the traditional eggnog (minus the alcohol). Quick and very easy to make, it's a recipe you may try and succeed in doing anywhere you want, as long as you have the good ingredients and tools to making it - it doesn't require an oven or any other elements like that, and so it is quite simple to achieve in a dorm room.
For this quick, easy recipe, you will need the following ingredients:
6 eggs;
3 cups of milk;
8 tablespoons of sugar;
3 teaspoons of vanilla essence; and
1/2 teaspoon of nutmeg, ground.
In a large bowl, start out by beating the eggs with an electric beater, if available. If not, any regular whisk will do just as well.
By turn, add the milk and sugar little by little until there is none left.
Continue beating until the mixture thickens slightly.
Add in the vanilla essence and ground nutmeg, beat some more.
Cover with a plastic wrap and refregirate until chilled (at least three hours).
If there are no regregirator available, here is a quick trick - place the bowl in a larger one, filled with cold water and ice.
When ready, all that is left to do is to enjoy!

Gossip Section
And now for the most anticipated column in the Chatter. Right here you can find out all the hottest happenings between everyone and anyone.
This month's issue actually starts out going back to catch up with the last few happenings during Halloween Week.
First, let's take a look at the slumber party shall we?
Freshman Roxanne Ellison and Junior Elijah Emerson were seen hurrying down the hallway from a closet both looking quite flustered. Trying to have her first time in a closet Elijah? Classy.
There looks like there could be trouble in paradise for our favorite dancer/writer couple. Said writer was seen hurrying out of the building alone looking quite unhappy. Kinda makes you wonder why the dancer was the one to messes something up, everyone had money on him.
It also looks like there is another couple to add to the ever growing list. Remember blonde sophomore Cassandra Preston came to the Homecoming dance with? Looks like he's moved on to bigger and blonder things, making things official with Junior dancer Cara Donovan.
And it seems that no one can hold Ms. Edward's interest for long as she was seen with sophomore Kristina Sylvia at the slumber party, wonder when we're going to see the two of them getting drunk together.
Moving on to another Halloween incident was the Baking Contest. Word is Addie Blythe and Connor got caught in the middle of things by Mr. Spencer of all people. You two do realize that you aren't animals don't you? You don't have to go at it whenever you get the need at least not wherever you get the need.
Now to bring things back up to speed is a bit more couple news.
First of all who would have thought that Cassandra Preston and Owen Graham of all people would be coupling up. But first Mr. Graham was seen bringing Ms. Preston to the nurses office looking quite cozy and next they're cast as the roles in the Freshman/Sophomore play Spring Awakening. Interesting choice of plays.
Though we hope Cass doesn't mind sharing because rumor is Owen finally attempted to make a movie on his step-brother's girlfriend, even was daring enough to swap a bit of spit with her. Hope you've got good protection ready, this is sure to cause some family wars.
Even the most unlikely of people seem to be hoping on the love train. We all know that Kimberly Nolan has a tendency to kind of hate people, so what's caught her eye about Bretton Ferguson? Apparently something because the two just keep getting closer, too bad he didn't hold out for Taylor longer maybe he wouldn't have to resort to Kimberly.
A certain senior photographer left her class looking a bit gloomy, and she wasn't the only one the professor seemed a bit gloomy as well. Curious little development considering said professor can hardly be described as gloomy.
And it seems as thought the near closet experience wasn't enough for Elijah and Roxanne because said Junior was seen with his hands down said freshman's pants in the library.
