PERSONALITY
Julian Meddel is without a doubt a highly flawed character. Everything about him reeks of selfishness, no matter how much of a front he may put on. For a fifteen year old, he is an accomplished hedonist, living his life to have the most fun he can – be it at the expense of others or not. Yes, he surrounds himself with friends, but for his own entertainment rather than through any sense of comradeship or loyalty – and if someone steps over the invisible lines he draws, he won’t hesitate to terminate the relationship immediately and find a new social group. And the odd thing is that he is perfectly capable of doing so. For someone so incredibly shallow, Julian is amazingly charming. Quick-witted, confident and a competent wordsmith, he knows full well that he is a complete charmer. He knows that with a bright smile and a few well placed compliments, people become putty in his perfect hands. And so he plays the part. You could call him a social butterfly, the way he attracts people. Julian is always up to something – be it strutting around performing impromptu street theater of setting up a risky practical joke for a teacher, and he’s the sort to establish a reputation as the class clown fast. Fun and charming, it comes as no surprise that people fall for him and his sweet little façade.
But Julian does have his few redeeming features. There are some things which matter to him deeply, and pierce the shell of egotism the boy wears like armor. For one thing, he takes his theater very seriously. Acting makes the world go round for Julian Meddel – he adores it. Adores the freedom and the restriction it provides, the insight to lives other than his – the opportunity to hurl his emotions at a crowd and never have them work out that the anger on stage was really his. And that being the case, Julian fears more than anything being thrown out of this school where acting is the center of the world. He may look like he treats school as a joke – but as soon as he finds himself alone he’ll slave away over school assignments like a man possessed. And there are people he does care deeply about – people he’ll put off all his self-involved plans to take care of. It just so happens that they’re few and far between. And of course he feels guilty when he jilts a friend or causes someone trouble – but he’s set on living his life to the full – because his brother didn’t have the chance to, and he doesn’t want to go the same way. And that’s the one chink in his armor: Andrew Meddel, deceased. A name than can reduce this boy to tears in an instant.
Julian is as selfish in relationships as he is in every other part of his life. A perfect charmer and a pretty face, he is the sort to sweep a girl off her feet just long enough to get her into bed and then leave her all alone. For a fifteen year old, sex is a big part of Julian’s life. It is, as far as he can tell, the ultimate pleasure. And so he gets as much of it as he can. Looking back over Julian Meddel’s dating history you are sure to find a long line of upset and angry girls all denying the fact that for those few weeks… he was their god. So he really isn’t the loving type. You’d have to be a very special person to be kept around by Julian once the deed is done. As far as men go, Julian has come to acknowledge that he can find a beautiful man at least as attractive as a beautiful woman. He simply hasn’t had the opportunity to try things out with a man yet, to make an informed comparison.
APPEARANCE
Julian relies heavily on his looks to get what he wants. The boy knows that he is pretty, and that some girls simply can’t say no to a pretty boy – and that being the case, his looks are important to him. He keeps himself well groomed as best he can without seeming to make the effort – the auburn hair kept smooth and sleek with more types of hair product than any self respecting man should have, the perfectly flawless skin cleansed toned and moisturized very secretly every morning and evening. Of course, some things about his beauty are entirely natural – the strikingly deep blue eyes lined with thick black lashes, for example; and the rosy lips which are admittedly brightened with a hint of chap stick. Physically too he is strikingly handsome – he is a good height for his age, but more noticeable than his height is the perfectly toned muscle packed into every available space on the lean body. Hours of rigorous exercise do, it seems, pay off eventually.
Clothing wise Julian is a bit more relaxed. After all, perfectly polished looks matched with stylish clothes would make him look far too gay to appeal to him. And, that being the case, Julian can usually be found in some creased shirt or another and a pair of jeans – nothing too shabby, but plain enough to make his looks seem deceptively effortless.
HISTORY
Julian Micah Meddel was born to his parents fifteen years ago in a perfectly ordinary way in a perfectly ordinary hospital. The birth, much like the pregnancy, was completely without drama. The parents themselves were in every possible way nothing unusual. The father, Wesley Meddel, was a plumber and had met the mother, now Valerie Meddel – a florist, at French language evening classes. They had had a very run of the mill romance – tentative dates, long nights spent together in one apartment or another and eventually a cheap but romantic proposal. They moved in together, had the usual little fights all couples were prone to, and soldiered on regardless. There was nothing – absolutely nothing – unusual about the Meddel family. With the one minor exception of the fact that Julian was born as one half of a pair. Non identical twins, Julian and Andrew.
Childhood was, like everything else in their lives, dull and ordinary. Preschool, followed by all those other schools which you attend over time. Andrew developed into the quieter of the pair – small, nerdy, easily frightened. In contrast Julian was confident, brash and a trouble-maker – but he always, always looked out for Andrew. They were, after all, two halves of the same coin. Andrew went to chess club, Julian went to drama club. Andrew aced math, Julian flunked science. They were perfect opposites, perfect brothers and perfectly ordinary. Their house was perfectly ordinary, their clothes perfectly ordinary and their social status perfectly usual. As far as Julian could tell they would be ordinary forever. But, when the twins were twelve, the story twisted. Andrew was hit by a bus, and died instantly. And suddenly ordinary wasn’t good enough. Nobody remembered ordinary.
So, if people were going to remember Andrew Meddel, something out of the ordinary would have to happen. And Julian decided that that would be him. He would make his name, and drag Andrew’s name with him. Fame was the obvious choice, and theater the obvious method – and Julian set his sights on GPA. His school grades picked up, his commitment to drama developed and eventually Julian achieved his aim: the acceptance letter. And he was another step up the ladder to fame.
