PERSONALITY
Shane loves social situations and he does well in them. He's got an easy way with small talk that allows him to start up conversations with almost anyone that he chooses. He's polite and a good listener, but he's horrible a meaningful conversations. It's not that he's not able to listen to them or understand them, it's that he can't actively participate in them. He doesn't enjoy talking about himself, although there's really no specific reason for it as his life has been good. Sure, he'll share his opinions and thoughts on arts, movies, books, the weather and how well he happens to be doing in the more superficial aspects of his life, but when it comes to the bigger questions of the world, well he just shuts right up. Although he's not embarrassed when a lot of attention is focused on him at once, he still doesn't enjoy it. Which is why he doesn't mind hanging around with people who demand to be in the spotlight, so long as they aren't stealing every bit of attention away from all others.
Some people might sometimes see him as having a large ego because he is well aware of all the blessings that he's had in his life and doesn't try to deny that he's got skills, money and intelligence. And sometimes he can unintentionally sound like he might be bragging about certain luxuries in his life that others can't always enjoy. While he is intelligent, he's also a huge procrastinator and tends to put things off until the very last moment that they can be done. Which is why when people try to disturb him any time he's doing work, he can get quite snappy. His temper can spark up easily depending on the situation, as there are just certain things that he doesn't tolerate; homophobia in particular always strikes a nerve with him and can get him pissed off. When he's really upset, he just gets quiet and the more upset the more quiet and still he'll become, giving only short answers if people try to talk to him. Most of his anger he'll take out in sports or other physical activity as he'd been taught to do so from childhood.
He's a fairly stubborn guy. When people try arguing with him, it usually doesn't go over well. Once he's made up his mind about something, it's near impossible to change it back. Largely due to the fact that when people try to make arguments to defend the 'other side' he tends to just ignore them. And he makes no apologies of doing so. In fact, apologies aren't things that he does all that well in the first place and he can hold a grudge for an impressive amount of time if he wishes and has been known to do so. However, he's not so quick to throw people out of his life, so they'll have to upset him a special kind of way if it is to ever get to that point.
As for relationships, Shane will admit that he's not very good at him. He's stuck in a bit of a weird place when it comes to dating and it's entirely his own fault. One night stands and flings hold little interest to him, because he was taught too thoroughly that people were more than sex partners. However, long term relationships never tend to work out either, always falling apart from the girl claiming that she doesn't know enough about him and that he's not open enough with them. So mostly he dates like normal, but never expects his relationships to really last.
APPEARANCE
Shane is attractive by the standards of most people and he knows it, although he's not one to brag. His dark black hair pairs with his bright blue eyes to have the fantasy combination that most girls dream about. Add that with his strong jaw and straight white smile and he could easily have an option of many different girlfriends. His height is an advantage as well, standing at about 6'1" with a more muscular tone from years of playing hockey. Overall, he's pleased with his looks and doesn't have much to complain about.
As for clothing, he doesn't really have all that much preference toward what he wears. His wardrobe, he's not ashamed to admit, has been largely made up by his mothers and he just picks and chooses what he wants to wear from that selection. Everything from dress shirts to sweatshirts are present and it's mostly a matter of what it is clean and convenient for the day. Clothes are usually just something that he has to wear, not something that make a big difference for him. It's always the last thing that he worries about when getting ready.
HISTORY
Shelley Burke was a 24 year old social worker in Whitehorse, Yukon when she met Loretta Winters, a 29 year old who was working as a general surgery resident at Whitehorse General one night at a bar. The two quickly hit it off and decided to see each other again for a proper date. One date turned into two and two into three and so on until they started a proper relationship. After two years of dating, Loretta proposed - although same sex marriage was not legal at the time - and Shelley happily accepted. It was another two years before they had the non-legal ceremony and considered themselves married and a further two years before they decided that they wanted to have children. Each woman was interested in having a baby a piece and each wanted their children to be related, so they picked a sperm donor and each got pregnant. Loretta's pregnancy had a few complications, as she was 35 while pregnant with Shane's sister, but Shelley's went without issue. It was surprising, therefore, when Shelley went into labor with Shane a week early, giving birth to the little one on August 11, 1993.
Exactly a week later on August 18, 1993, Shane's sister Shannon Andrea Winters joined the family. Although they aren't even more than biologically half siblings and despite the fact that they are a week apart, Shelley and Loretta always referred to them as 'the twins' and they still do to this day. Shelley quit her job to stay at home full time with the twins and enjoyed doing so thoroughly. Loretta had to work long hours at the hospital, but they persevered and made it through with the young family not having any monetary issues at all. Shelley made sure to expose the children to all sorts of activities as they grew up. Like any true Canadian male, Shane started young on hockey and was fair at it, while Shannon took figure skating lessons. Despite her busy work schedule, Loretta made it to as many events as she was possibly able and Shelley was at every single one to cheer on her children. Once they started going to school full time, she started to work again but only on a part time basis (and only during school hours, unless Loretta had a day off) to make sure she was around as much as she could be for her children.
Through the exposure to different activities, it was discovered that Shane had a natural talent for art, in both painting and drawing he excelled beyond that of a normal child his age and more than that, it was something that he enjoyed. Whenever he was bored, he'd start drawing and as time went on he simply drew out of pleasure instead of boredom. Happy to see how well that he'd been doing, his parents decided to find some art classes, outside of the ones designated at school, to put him in. He was excited by the idea and those art lessons quickly became the highlight of his weeks, his skill continuing to grow with time and soon many different works that he'd done were all over the walls of his home. Mostly though, he lived a normal life just like everyone else and continued to play hockey throughout his school years.
As he started to get older, Loretta started looking into options to get him a better education and a better development of his art skills. Although Shane didn't really consider them to be all that special, she knew that her son had a gift and thought that it was only right that he continue to advance in it. She looked at many different schools that could help him both advance his art and offer him a first class education. When she found Gordon Parks' she was torn between the want to help her son have the best, and the want to keep him close by. Still, in the end her want for him to have the best opportunities won out and she asked him if he might be interested. To her surprise, he met the idea with excitement and was on board to submit an application. Shelley, however was not as happy with the idea and a fight went on within the family for the first time that Shane could remember. In the end, it was decided that if he got accepted he'd be able to go to the Academy and a little over a month later the acceptance did come. So, in the fall he packed his bags to head to the Academy.
