A Good Read...

Reading, was the thing that Noah loved to do more than anything else in the whole world. Right after filming and editting and stuff like that. Obviously. He could read anything, from big thick volumes to all sorts of comic books. Yes, comic books. He was a nerd but, so what? Comic books were fun! ...At least to him. His love for comic books wasn't something that he normally displayed to the whole world. It wasn't exactly considered 'normal'. Just like foreign movies weren't either...

That particular day he was looking for a good read, something that would grip him. And he did have something in mind - he'd recently reread one of his all-time favourite novels - The Kite Runner - but hadn't had the chance to read the next book by the author, A Thousand Splendid Sons. He'd heard that it was supposed to be very good and was on his way to try and borrow it from the library. He doubted however, that it would be on loan - they'd barely been back at school long enough for that!

He was about to begin looking for it - not by using the catalogue at first because he liked to wander around, getting a feel for what books they had. Sometimes something would jump out at him and he'd have to get that out too. Eventually he would go looking properly though... As he was walking along the aisles he saw something that he didn't expect to see in the library at Gordon Parks. But then, he shouldn't be too surprised, this place had every book, ever! Well, almost. Picking it up he glanced at the title: "Stan Lee: Comic Book Genius". He grinned at flipped it over to read the blurb on the back...

Typically, Cara Donovan would not be caught walking towards the Library. It was just a place at GPA that most people would think to go looking for her. Not that she isn't smart, because she is, but it's because Cara thinks there are way more imporant things she could be doing with her time than picking up a book and reading it. She does read, but the same three books over and over again. This drove her little sister insane. She loved to read, so having an older sister that just rented the movie made her want to rip her hair out. But, today anyways, Cara found herself walking towards the Library. The people around her gave her weird looks as she pushed open the door that opened to the Library. "Honestly, I do read!" She muttered loudly, and crossed her arms as she walked.

She wasn't even too sure what she was looking for. She owned the three or four books she'll read over and over again, but she wanted to find something new to read. As she walked down an aisle, she saw the sophomore film student, Noah Kay. A light smile played on her lips. She knew that her and Noah never really got along (she figured it was because he was so smart, and she just wasn't) so it was sort of nice to see him. She thought that maybe, just maybe, they could get along this year. She walked down the aisle, and played with a strand of her blonde hair. She deep blue eyes scanned the books as she walked. She kind of forgot that Noah was even in the book aisle. She crashed right into him, and fell over.

"Oh!" Cara said, and her pale face turned bright red. "I'm so, so sorry!" She was too embrassed to ever stand up. "I wasn't even paying attention...which is weird because I just saw you..." Ok, now she was just going on and on about nothing. When she does this, no one really ever gets what she's saying. Her was was still bright red when she said, "Hi Noah....How are you today?"

Noah didn't quite notice Cara come into the aisle. If he had he would probably have put down the book and moved on. Or maybe taken it with him. It wasn't to avoid Cara - he just wasn't feeling very social. And he didn't exactly want to be seen with a book on Stan Lee. He doubted very much that anyone much would understand at all. But, it just so happened that he didn't see Cara until she bumped in to him. It was bizzare, lately either he was falling down or others were falling down around him...

As he fell to the ground the book fell out his hands and he cringed inwardly, now there was a very good chance that someone would see. Once on the ground he looked up to see who it was that had bumped in to him...Cara Donovan. They weren't exactly the best of friends. Still, he would be civil. She began to talk as he stood up and brushed himself off - the book lay discarded a little way on in the aisle. When Cara began to talk he raised an eyebrow - she saw him and yet still walked into him? Bizzare. He looked down at her, still on the floor and tried to smile. "Hello Cara." he said, for some reason his voice coming out deeper than usual. "You don't need to be sorry, its ok." He then reached out a hand to her to help her get up... "I'm quite good. And you?"

She giggled when Noah told her that she didn't need to be sorry. "I am, though. It wasn't very lady like of me to just crash into you and make us both fall over." She had no idea why she cheeks still seemed to be flushing red. She is always falling, so this wasn't anything new. In yet, it felt oddly different this time. Normally when she trips, falls, crashes into a wall, etc., she is with one of her friends. This time however, she was not. If there was one this she hated it was making herself look like an idiot infront of someone she knows doesn't like her too much. "I'm very well, too. Thank you for asking. She grabbed his hand as he pulled her up. "Thanks." She could feel her cheeks getting even more hott. What was up with that? She looked down, and saw that she was still holding his hand. She let go, and reached down to pick up the book she had knocked out of his hands.

She looked at it for a moment. It was a book about a man who wrote comics? Was that it? She smiled as she handed it to him. "My brother always had a comic book in his hands when we were little." She giggled, "Even the nannies got sick and tired of him reading them all the time. He always liked the Super Man ones. I honestly have no idea why. They weren't as good as the Batman and Robin ones. They always had a lot of action in them." Ok, so, she may have read one of two when she was a little girl. Big deal! Well, her brother, Rhyan, would sometimes read them to her. Either way, she still read them when she was a child. She smiled at him again. "I didn't even know they had books like these here. I guess you just never know at GPA, do you?"

Noah raised both his eyebrows this time - Cara didn't exactly seem the kind of girl who would be too bothered about being ladylike! But then...she was a dancer, it probably was expected. But still, being ladylike wasn't usually a major concern of many girls nowadays. It was only as he was musing these thoughts did he realise that for some reason she hadn't let go of his hand. Or maybe he hadn't let go of hers. It seemed as though they seemed to have had the same thought at the same time as they both let go of each other quite rapidly. The only thing was, now he was blushing just as badly as she was. What an odd situation this was.

Then, as she went to pick up the book the blush grew even redder and cringed slightly. Trust it to be that book of all of them! He watched her reaction as she picked it up and read the title...it didn't seem too bad, yet. She then started talking about her brother reading comic books - when they were little. Little being the operative word. It wasn't exactly something a teenager would do. If it was one of his close friends he would have come straight out but this was someone he barely knew so he began to think of an excuse, it went something like this: Oh yeah, I used to read them too when I was little. I was just looking at it cuz it wasn't something I would expect to find at GPA... But he lost his train of thought when she started talking about the comics books like she'd read them, his mouth fell open in shock. That did not seem like her kind of thing... "You...you read comic books? I didn't know that! What ones have you read?!" he asked, beginning to get a little excited. Then he realised, she never once said that she read them NOW, she could easily have been talking about when he was little... "I used to be totally addicted to them as a little kid..." he added - again, his voice seemed to be coming much deeper than it normally would. It was really quite strange.

Cara inwardly laughed at his reaction of her picking up his book. It was almost like he didn't want her to read the title. Cara hoped at the time it wasn't a book on how to get laid or anything. But, it was just a book about comic books. That really was no big deal. When he asked her if she read comic books, she smiled at him. "I've read my fair share. I haven't really read one in a while, though. It's too bad, really. I always got a laugh or two at them." She had to think about the ones she read when she was a little girl. "I used to read Spider Man, Batman and Robin, Super Man, Wonder Woman, Power Rangers, and the cute little Disney one every now and again. I had to throw a little bit of girly in there somewhere." She gave him a wink, and sly grin. This wasn't a conversation she ever thought she would be having here at GPA with anyone. So, it was a tinny bit awkward for her. Not that she showed it, though. She tried to be Little Miss Sunshine, and friendly with everyone.

"You would have loved my brother, Noah." Cara laughed again, "I mean, he was always with a comic book when he was younger. In-fact, his girlfriend tells me that she still sees him reading them all the time when he thinks no one is watching." She walked over to a nearby table, and waved for him to come and join her. She had no where she needed to be, and she figured he didn't either. Well, she didn't know this for sure, but she guessed he didn't. If Noah was down here looking at books about comics, it must mean he's got nothing better to do with his time right now. So, Cara thought that he'd join her at the table. "What's your favorite one? I already told you that I like Batman and Robin the best." She crossed her legs, and looked happily at him.

Thankfully, he had managed to save himself from a potentially embarrassing situation by...well, lying. But what else could he do? It wasn’t like he’d admit it to...to anyone in particular. "My favourite one when I was little was Spiderman, that dude is definitely the coolest out of all the superheroes but I also like Batman and Robin, and the Incredible Hulk. I think I still have all my old comics back home in London somewhere. I told my Dad not to throw them out. And last year I bought one of the really early Spiderman ones - it cost a fortune but I couldn't resist!" he replied, not feeling totally comfortable with himself, it wasn't your everyday situation: talking to a girl he didn't particularly like, about comic books. Still, he tried not to let it show. But before long he'd think up some excuse to leave...

It was then that she walked over to a table and called him over - she wanted him to sit with her. He dithered a little, not quite making up his mind but then he thought that he may as well, for a little while. He could leave if the situation got awkward. Until then, he could sit there and talk about comics with a girl that he never expected to do that with...

Cara didn't really know why she asked him to join her at the table. It wasn't like she liked him, or he liked her. So...why were they being so nice to each other? It was one of those things where no one really knew the answer. Also, Noah not really knowing her was something she took to her advantage. She figured that it would be the perfect time to get to know him better. She knew that he was a sophomore film person who is a comic geek who lives in England...but what else? She wasn't too sure. Of course, she had heard things. She is a huge gossiper about some subjects, so she's heard one or two rumors about Mr. Noah Kay. Not that ever really believed them. A rumor is only as good as the person who's telling it. Still she was not sure why she wanted to sit down and talk to him. Of course, the conversation was not going to be all about comic books. Cara is never one to talk about something for very long.

"So," She said with a wide, warm smile playing on her lips, "I know that you like comic books...but what else? Do you have any other hobbies? Anything besides filming everything?" She hoped he just wouldn't get up and walk away. Cara always likes to get to know a person really well before she can everything about becoming close to them. She may seem like she's being to personal, but she isn't. Not her, anyways. "Tell me!" She said happily, giggling slightly.

Noah walked over and was about to sit next to Cara before he changed his mind, was that being a little too intimate? Instead he walked to sit opposite to her, across the table. Once again, he wasn’t quite sure why it was that he was doing this but, he obliged. He was just being nice. She was a little eager, it made him slightly uncomfortable. He hesitated before saying “Um. Well I spend almost all my time filming, it’s practically all I do. I guess I like to read too.”

He smiled tentatively, “How about you? What do you like doing except, dancing?” He remembered at the end of last year when he’d watched the end-of-year dance recital. He had been blown away by all the dancers, he remembered Cara too, and she was really good...

When Noah said that he spent all his time filming, she nearly didn't believe him. Who could spend all their time just doing one thing? Not that she didn't love dancing, she did; it was her favorite thing to do, but all the time? No way. That was just way too much. Her feet always got really sore after about seven or eight hours. That was about the amount of time she was dancing over the Summer. She only got a five minute break every hour and a half when a new class was coming in. Well, he did also say that he liked to read. That was something else. Not that Miss Cara Nicole is a big reader. She always said that she had way better things to do than sit down and read for an hour. She gave Noah a sweet grin, though.

"I do a lot besides dancing." She crossed her legs, making herself much for comfortable. "I really like to hang out with my two best friends. You might know them," She paused for a second, "Firstly, Vanessa. Vanessa Marymount. She's my amazing best friend." She smiled happily. She really was. They've been "biffles" since the ninth grade. "Also, my little sister. Alexis Donovan. She's a freshman here...for theater." She still could got get over this fact, "We've been best friends since the day she's been born." What else did she like to do? There was a lot, "I also really like to listen to music. Even though I always start to dance to it! Oh well..." She sighed, wondering if really...all she did was dance too? That made her think. It was a touchy subject....

Was it odd, Noah wondered, that he spent all his time filming? That he was completely and utterly devoted to his art? He didn't really think it was and he assumed that it was different because the talents were all massively different - you couldn't sing all the time or you'd lose your voice, couldn't dance all the time or you'd injure yourself, couldn't paint all the time, couldn't act all the time. Well, you could, if you were a complete and utter fake. But filming and photography were similar - you had to have your camera on you at all times to capture anything fascinating. And then there was so much editting to do! That applied to filming more than photography though. And maybe he was exaggerating a little...he didn't spend ALL his time filming, just a lot of it. Or he spent his time thinking about filming. And often, editting took longer than it should because he spent quite a lot of time surfing aimlessly on the internet...

He was brought back to the conversation when he heard Cara speaking about his friends. He knew of Vanessa he just didn't know her. He'd spoken to her once or twice before but, due to his shyness, the friendship hadn't spread much further. And Cara's sister Alexis, he'd met her a little earlier and he liked her instantly, she'd seemed nicer than her sister. Although, he did feel a little weird thinking that now - after Cara was being so friendly. But, he couldn't exactly help it. Cara was a little too sunshiny... "I know Alexis." he said, "She seems really nice." he smiled at Cara again and then laughed a little when she said that she herself always started to dance to music. He expected as much, people were so devoted to their talent. "I guess I like to hang out my friends too - I'm really good friends with Michael, he's a senior, and also Abby. Abigail Donner. You probably know Michael but not Abby so much, she's a little shy..."

Cara was a little shocked that he knew Alexis. She was a freshman...but she is very sociable. So, she then wasn't really very shocked. Plus, Alexis seemed like she'd be a perfect friend for Noah, and vice versa. Both seemed to have some of the same attitudes. Plus, Alexis is an actress and Noah is a film student...and Cara guessed that they would work well together. She sort of shrugged to herself. That made her giggle. "Sorry..." She said, and heard Noah say something about Michael and Abigail. At first, she thought he meant Abigail Kingly. Cara loved her. She was Alexis' roommate, and a total sweetheart. "I know Michael. Michael James, right?" She didn't know any other Mike's that went to their school. "And Abigail Donner, I think I do know her." The name sounded so famiular...She couldn't quite put a name to a face, though. That really bothered her.

Cara started to wonder what time it was. Not that she really cared. It wasn't like she had any place to be. Maybe class...but who cared about class at the moment? "So, what's your favorite class here, Noah?" Cara twirled a piece of her pretty blonde hair in her hand. This was really a nervous habbit...but she wasn't really nervous. How odd...Oh well. She guessed she could be doing something else that was just as gross...like having being caught with her finger up her nose of something. That was just TOO gross. She had seen a few people do that here, and she wanted to, and most likey did, gag when she saw this.

Noah shrugged when Cara asked him what his favourite subject was. He didn't really have one. Apart from film, of course. He liked English Literature because he loved to read but he didn't really love the analysing so much. He was good at it though. He didn't much like many of the other subjects but he was good at them because he worked hard. "Um. I'm not so sure about my favourite. Apart from film I guess it would probably be English Literature. I love the reading but I don't much like the analysing, even if I am good at it..." he paused "How about you?"

He looked at his watch, he had a niggling feeling that he had to be somewhere. Or maybe it was just that he was feeling uncomfortable. He knew that Cara was just being friendly and trying to make conversation but somehow he felt it was more of an interrogation. Ok, maybe he was being ridiculous. But still, while talking to Cara his mind was still trying to think of some way that he could leave without being rude...

Typically, Cara tends to go off into la-la land when she's having a conversation with someone that either A) she doesn't like or B) Doesn't like her. But, who could hold a conversation with someone like that? It really made no sense. Cara thought that maybe if they tried hard enough, they could indeed at least try and become somewhat of friends? Maybe not. She didn't really dislike anyone too, too much. She wasn't one to say "I hate you!" to anyone. That she wasn't her style. "Really?" Cara asked, and smiled, "English Literature is my favorite, too. Well, after dance, that is." It was then that her eyes almost popped out of her head.

"Oh!" She stood up, and looked at her cell phone. She could not believe that she had forgotten about her extra warm up time. How stupid of her! "Oh, Noah....I'm sorry!" She threw her phone in her purse, and looked sadly at him, "I totally forgot that I'm getting an extra dance practice in! I cannot believe I forgot." She shook her head, and sighed. "I do really feel bad." She picked up her purse and placed her pretty pink sunglasses. They were her trademark, after all. "Stop by my room anytime. Ok? Bring a comic book or something." She smiled brightly, and waved. "See you!" She skipped out of the room, and ran to the dance studio.
