PERSONALITY
Joshua is a very spunky young man. He loves being in the spotlight and, even when he is not the lead character, he is nearly always the brightest personality on stage. He is very dynamic; he prefers comedies or tragedies. Josh is not too fond of the ‘in the middle’ plays.
Josh is very comfortable in his own skin and can delve into any character. He does not break character, even if he is back stage or the performance hasn’t started yet. He doesn’t care too much about what he wears on stage.
Some people say he has no real personality and that he is just a mix of all of his past characters combined. Some of these past roles include Guys And Dolls’ Sky Masterson, Tha Pajama Game’s Vernon Heines, Once Upon a Mattress’s Prince Dauntless, You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown’s Snoopy, The Wizard of Oz’s Tin Man, Les Miserables’ Enjrolas, and Into The Woods’ Cinderella’s Prince.
Off stage, Josh is a very calm young man. He still cracks jokes constantly. If he is not in his dorm, he is usually on the stage or in the booth as he also works lights. That’s what’s great about Josh- he’s a techie too!
Josh is also an amazing vocal talent and although he got into Gordon Parks for his acting, he is also a member of their choir. His deep bass tone resonates through the stage and is usually always heard. If given a choice, he would much rather perform a musical piece then any other form of music. His second favorite style is Country.
Josh has a deep love for all animals and has often considered being a zookeeper if his acting career does not pan out.
APPEARANCE
Josh can change his appearance to fit any role be it human or animal. As a result, he doesn’t really look the same for too long.
He has an oval shaped face and high cheek bones. His bright blue eyes are perfect for any kind of colour changing contacts and he wears them frequently. His usually shoulder-length, thin hair is a naturally light brown, which can make it difficult to die but he always finds a way.
Josh usually wears skinny jeans and a long-sleeved plaid or striped dress shirt. He also has an oddly deep love of belts and is usually wearing at least three. He also has many interchangeable belt buckles including his favorite: a pokeball.
Josh has no problem modifying his appearance for a show. He grows facial hair very quickly so he doesn’t usually have to wear prosthetic hair but he doesn’t mind. He dyes his own hair and owns 17 different pairs of coloured and theatrical contacts. He also enjoys wearing his contacts around campus. The first few times it freaked people out, but many have stopped even noticing the change.
HISTORY
Joshua Larsen was born with no middle name. His parents decided early on in their romantic partnership that none of their children would as a way to ‘get back at society’. Weather or not it worked was their call.
From a very young age, it was apparent that Josh had no stage fright. From the little Christmas play done in Kindergarten to the third grade talent show, Josh could be seen in any performance. When he was nine, he was introduced to the local youth theatre and stared in his first performance of The Wizard of Oz as a munchkin. Over the years, Josh developed his love of the spotlight through the youth theatre and went on to do many other productions with them. He also began to work back stage on costumes and lights.
When he was thirteen, he went to an audition. What they didn’t tell him, was that the audition wasn’t for a play. It was for a film. He was asked to go back to Hollywood with them to be cast in the film. Josh, however, wanted no such part. He knew his style of acting and he knew that he had a desperate need of an audience to feed off of. Without those faces staring back at him or laughing at his lines, he was just another guy. He turned the movie down.
Three months later, Josh received a letter in the mail saying he had been accepted into the Gordon parks Academy for the Arts. He was overjoyed. Unfortunately, that was before he saw the price tag. But he worked as hard as he could at his mother’s business (gardening) and by the time he was of age to actually get into the school, he had about two years tuition in savings.
He is now in his first year at the Academy and works a part time job around classes. He doesn’t make much, but he hopes that a miracle will occur that will let him stay in school.
When he arrived at the school, he decided to go by Joshua Vern as his stage name; he believed Larsen was to common.
ROLE PLAYING SAMPLE
The dark stage seemed to call his name. There was a single spotlight centered on the wood flooring. Then, his name really rang out through the nearly empty theatre and he stepped out.
Three people sat in the third row of the audience. They where the only bodies in the theatre save Josh. The one in the middle spoke loudly and clearly. “Joshua Vern. You are auditioning for the role of The Engineer in the Gordon parks Academy of the Arts’ 2010 Production of Miss Saigon. Please start with your monologue.
Josh nodded, accepting and approving the information provided. After a quick breath, he started his monologue.
“Oh don't go.” He took a few steps toward the side of the stage, as if following someone. He smiles uncomfortable at the audience. “ Maybe someone else will come out in a minute. Of course, sometimes people have soliloquies in Shakespeare. Let's just wait a moment more and maybe someone will come.“ After a few seconds silence, he takes up a dramatic Shakespearean pose. “To be, or not to be, that is the question.” He stops-he knows no more. “Oh, maid.” There is no response. After another quick pause, he ‘remembers’ that actors call for their lines if they forget them. “Line. Ohhh!” He suddenly remembers more of Hamlet’s monologue. “Oh what a rogue and peasant slave am I. Whether 'tis nobler in the mind's eye to kill oneself, or not killing oneself, to sleep a great deal. We are the stuff that dreams are made of, and out lives are rounded by a little sleep.” He pauses uncomfortably before deciding to just spout out random quotes. “Uh, thrift, thrift, Horatio, neither a buyer nor a lender be, but to thine own self be true. There is a special providence in the fall of a sparrow. Amazing how potent cheap music can be. Out, out, damn spot! I come to wive it wealthily in Padua; if wealthily, then happily in Padua” He takes a few steps forward, no slightly comfortable with his random quoting. He decides to continue, broadening his palate and taking from more then just Shakespeare. “How is China? Very large, China. How is Japan? Very small, Japan. I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands - one nation, under God, Indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for All.” He ‘sees’ a look from someone in the audience and realizes he is failing at his attempt to entertain them.
“Line! Line! Oh my God.” Getting an idea, he clasps his hand together in a praying formation and mutters quickly but audibly. “Oh my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended thee, and I detest all my sins because I dread the loss of Heaven and the pains of Hell. But most of all because they offend thee, my God, who art all good and deserving of all my love. And I resolve to confess my sins, to do penance, and to amend my life. Amen. “ He slaps his hands to his sides and looks at the audience again.
“That's the act of contrition that Catholic schoolchildren say. Catholic adults say it too, I imagine. I don't know any Catholic adults. Line! When you call for a line, the stage manager normally gives you your next line, to refresh your memory. Line! The quality of mercy is not strained. It droppeth as the gentle rain upon the place below, when we have shuffled off this mortal coil. Alas, poor Yorick, I knew him well. Get thee to a nunnery. Line.
Nunnery. As a child, I was taught by nuns, and then in high school I was taught by Benedictine priests. I really rather liked the nuns. They were sort of warm, though they were fairly crazy too. Line. I liked the priests also. The school was on the grounds of a monastery, and my junior and senior years I spent a few weekends joining in the daily routine of the monastery -- prayers, then breakfast, then prayers, then lunch, then prayers, then dinner, then prayers, then sleep. I found the predictability quite attractive. And the food was good. I was going to join the monastery after high school, but they said I was too young and should wait. And then I just stopped believing in all those things, so I never did join the monastery. I became an accountant. I've studied logarithms, and cosine and tangent . . . “ He is irritated now. “Line!”
“I'm sorry.” He smiles apologetically at the three audience members. “This is supposed to be Hamlet or Private Lives or something, and I keep rattling on like a maniac. I really do apologize. I just don't recall attending a single rehearsal. I can't imagine what I was doing. And also you came expecting to see Edwin Booth and you get me. I really am very embarrassed. Sorry. Line!!” He screams and falls to his knees. When he gets no reply to even his most dramatic attempt, he stands up, shakes his head and solemnly walks off stage.
As soon as he is behind the curtain, he grins. “Nailed it” he comments under his breath before he turns and walks back onto the stage to sing Wicked’s Defying Gravity for his second part of the audition.
