PERSONALITY
Rebellious is probably the word that comes to mind first when describing Ruth, from an outsiders' point of view. She dislikes the rules she's been given to live upon, and does all she can to disobey them little by little, not noticeably enough to be grounded til she turns eighteen, but still good enough to ease her conscience a bit. She's a pro at sneaking out, having done it numerous time since the age of fourteen back home in spite of her bedroom being on the second floor - luckily enough, the roof drops down quite a bit and near to a tree which she can climb doy. Unlike most of her sisters, she's really athletic and loves most sports, even though she's not technically allowed to participate in a real team, which she would have loved, but her parents never thought it a suitable choice of activity for a girl. Soccer is her favorite, though she sometimes varies with baseball and volleyball, not to any of her family's knowledge of course.
She has a harsh outward appearance, not necessarily blocking everyone out but not letting them in easily either. She's very picky as to who she lets become close friends of her - those people are usually those who know everything of her, and mostly more than any of her family members know. She's not really the emotional type, and rarely gets bothered by knowing if she might have caused trouble or anything of the sort. If she wants something, she'll do anything to get it, even if that involves pushing someone aside or blackmailing. She's not naturally mean, and it can't be said that she enjoys to see other people suffering or being pushed down, but she's just learnt that to get what she wants, she must do what it takes. She has a very bright and quick mind, and she catches on to the simplest detail very fast, which makes it easy for her to learn many facts at once and retain them all.
But under it all, she has a very insecure nature. Pushed aside by most of her family, she grew up in the shadow of her eldest sisters and brother, also to find that even the only youngest child was given more attention than her. She easily gets jealous, and she doesn't really do anything to hide it either when it happens. If her brooding helps make the other people guilty, then so be it - it's usually her goal. Still, when she gets out of her more sulky attitude, she can be a pretty interesting girl to hang out with - she has an open mind and a certain talent for bringing out the fun in most situations, though she rarely uses it. She has a natural disposition to cheerfulness which has been repressed, along with quite a few sides of her personality. Her sexual preference is not something she'd ever been able to display in a public manner, which is another weight added on her shoulders, but she's been dealing with it since the age of thirteen, and not being a believer like the rest of her family eases up her conscience on that one quite a bit.
APPEARANCE
Standing at five feet seven inches, Ruth shares many family traits with most of her sisters. Pale skin, tall and slim, she's a very attractive girl and has been told so many times. In spite of her parents' protest, she dyes her hair a darker brown than her natural color - which is also brown, but a lighter tint - sometimes close to black, which brings out her changing eyes, sometimes green, sometimes blue. Well shaped, she doesn't lack any features or body parts that might attract someone to her. Her body has an hourglass figure, but well proportioned to her weight and height. That, however, is where the similarities to her siblings end. Whereas the rest of her family tends to dress and style in a more conventional and conversative manner, those two terms are hardly part of Ruth's vocabulary.
She usually goes for a more showy style, choosing clothes that bring out her best features and without any shame to them either. She tends to dress in darker colors - black, dark purple, dark red, dark blue and all the rest, though she will sometimes mix it up with a neutral gold or paler shades of cold tones. As a contrast to her younger sister, she absolutely hates the color pink, and refuses herself to own any kind of accessory, shoe, shirt, skirt, dress, pants, underwear or even socks of that color. Her signature look usually involves dark skinny jeans, a long t-shirt that almost reaches mid-thighs and has a lower neckline though the waist is slightly baggy and highheel black velvet boots that reach mid-calf - she hardly owns anything else than boots. Accessorizing is also a must, her favorite being large sunglasses, and her makeup is usually quite simple, a slightly tinted lipgloss with dark eyeliner and sometimes a bit of eyeshadow.
HISTORY
Ruth Ann Ellison was fifth born to Reagan and Raymond Ellison, late at night on the 24th of October 1992, in Boston, Massachussetts. Being the fourth girl of the family, she brought on a bit of disappointment with her birth, to her father especially who thought he'd finally manage to have boy after his only son's birth the preceeding year, though her mother was secretly relieved to see that she had not been given a second son, seeing how her husband obviously preferred and spoiled him over the others. Ruth received the same strict and religious upbringing as the rest of her family, receiving a more traditional outlook as to what life had in for her, a girl, who was not really expected to do much more than get married and raise a family of her own. Strangely though, even as a child that idea never really appealed to her, whereas her older sisters were already dreaming of their future children by the age of eight. But the thought of being a housewife with five children running along always made her feel somewhat claustrophobic, as thought being trapped in a future that wasn't her own.
Ruth was always the most active of the girls, which caused her a few scoldings but in the end her parents gave up on repressing her need for letting out her outburst of energy, which caused her to grow a bit closer to her brother in her early childhood, but as soon as he turned a bit older, he withdrew from her which caused her to feel lonelier than before, having never felt a strong need to spend time with any of her sisters, and now finding that she felt like a stranger when hanging out with them. She was only eight when Ryan went through her own rebellious stage, soon followed by Rebecca who chose the same path, and she felt the little of attention she'd always received drifting away even more, even after Ryan was safely married, her parents' attention then turning to Rosaleen who was expected to take the same course though it never actually happened. She always felt a bit of a grudge toward her older sisters who caused her to feel like even more of an outsider than she would have otherwise. But she reserved her biggest dislike to her kid sister.
Only one year old when Roxanne was born, Ruth lost her status of baby of the family and so the only interest she held for most people. She grew up to see her more spoiled than the others it seemed to her, with the exception of Randall, resenting her as much as all the things that made her liked - her gentleness, her studiousness and her overall perfectness. In her heart, she figured that it was wrong to dislike her for the good things she brought with her, but she couldn't help the feeling of jealousy that came with seeing her being such a favorite with he cuteness as a child, and later with her helpfulness around the house. The whole unfairness of the situation lead Ruth to her own time of rebelling, which started much younger than the rest of her sisters. By the age of 12, she'd already decided she didn't share the religious beliefs of her family, staying out of church as much as possible, and already breaking small rules like frequentations and chores. She started hanging out with a group of people she knew her parents wouldn't necessarily approve, though they weren't delinquents or anything of the sort, just more on the marginal side, and that's when she met Casey.
She only stayed friends with the girl for two months, until her family moved away to Atlanta, but it was enough to cause a shocking self discovery. At thirteen, there was no doubt in her mind that she felt a stronger attraction toward girls than boys, and Casey was just the proof of that, which caused a few experimentations, more on the innocent side seeing their young age, but it settled it for her, and the years to come only confirmed the knowledge. Keeping it hidden from the rest of her family, she started seeing other girls and dating around the age of fourteen, often sneaking out at night to meet up with them, in spite of her sharing a room with Roxanne, though she always made sure to leave a fake trace, knowing she would be in less trouble - though in trouble none the less - if her family thought she was off to meet with boys rather than girls, keeping up with these nightly activities up to now still. The winter after she turned fifteen brought on a change in the household that was nothing to make her happier or less jealous of her sister.
Roxanne, it was known, had a certain passion for photography, which had been encouraged by their mother and tolerated by their father, but it was now found that she'd been allowed to try for out for a prestidigious art school in another state, and that was just about it for Ruth. Though the outburst of jealousy was rather confusing for those who noticed it, there was a reason behind it. Since the age of eleven, Ruth has secretly developped a passion of her own for writing, tales and stories flowing out of her imaginative mind, though she'd never shared it knowing that it would most likely not be encouraged as Roxanne's hobby had. However, seeing her able to accomplish such a thing was too much for Ruth, and she made up her mind - if Roxanne could get out of this stupid household, then so could she. Though it was technically too late to apply for the year '08-'09, Ruth filled out her own application, enclosing some of her stories and school reports and sending them away. Obviously impressed, the school offered her the possibility to enter halfway through the year, if she would take up a few additional studies and successfully pass the end of term exams. She poured her heart and soul in the textbooks she received by mail and hid from the rest of the family, as well as her passing the exams, and only announced the news when the full scholarship was granted her, giving her family no other option but to let her go.
