PERSONALITY
Derek is often portrayed as being a jerk, but he’s just blunt and honest. His brain has trouble keeping up with mouth, which takes the whole foot in mouth saying to a whole new level. Although, he doesn’t mean to hurt those he cares about, most of his friends find his honesty a little hard to work with. Derek is clear with his opinions and often butts heads with those who don’t agree, but he tries not to let his attitude get too far. Apart from that, Derek is a big softy. He has a weird way of making others feel at ease with his out going personality. You can count on him to fill an awkward pause with nonsense babbling.
A sense of humor is the one thing that Derek lacks. His idea of humor is more dark and sarcastic. For those who don’t know him particularly well are put off by the snarky comments that mean to be funny. Now like all sociable individuals, Derek has a heart for a good time. He likes adventure in his life. There is no way you would catch him sitting in his room on a Friday or Saturday night. Parties are his idea of having some fun and he’ll drink and smoke to his heart’s content. His grandparents aren’t very fond of Derek smoking, but he’s been trying very hard to quit. He just wants to find a reason to. Taking a drag from a cigarette is what makes him feel good and if he can’t find a substitute for that feeling he will not be quitting any time soon.
School is important to Derek. He never skips a class and he does all of his homework. Although, he may have a little trouble here and there with his ADD, but Derek tries very hard to do his best. Medicine for his problem is out of the question, he simply refuses to be limited to something he believes he can learn to overcome. Derek considers anyone he gets along with a friend and becomes very protective over certain people he’s fond of. He will have friend’s back a hundred percent. If there is anyone to lean on in a time of need he’s your guy. But, when it comes to girls, Derek is a big flirt, he loves the female attention. He is all for fun and games, but he doesn’t want a fling. He’ll spend his time with a girl who he thinks is worth it and challenges him. A chase is his favorite game to play.
APPEARANCE
Derek can be considered as an attractive guy with cropped sandy brown hair that is often left in a disarrayed fashion. He refuses to pull a brush through it as he is not particularly fond of styling it. His eyes are a piercing stone grey often narrowed as if he were glaring. They give off an intense stare when he his immediate interest. He has a square shaped face with a strong jaw that tenses up when he’s in a foul mood. His features take strongly after his late mother, but his eyes are the one thing he seemed to have inherited from his non existent father.
Appearance is not everything to him. Derek is a t-shirt and jeans type of guy. Suits and button down shirts are not his forte, but he will wear one if he absolutely has to. He stands just south of six feet and has a strong build from his athletics. His face is kept clean and neat, shaved whenever he sees just a whisper of hair beginning to grow in. He finds it an inconvenience at times and wonders how girls can handle shaving their legs every other day.
HISTORY
James and Alice were the “it” couple of their high school. He was a member of the baseball team and she was top of their class. It defied all the status quo rules of high school, but they made it work. James had been absolutely infatuated with Alice Lang ever since she became his personal tutor in Geometry junior year. As for Alice? Well, her notebook practically had James’ last name tacked to hers like a ten year old girl with an obsessive crush. They played the cat and mouse game for most of the year and spent the summer before senior year together. The chemistry and attraction grew so much that it became unbearable and on Independence Day under the glow of fireworks they made their relationship official. They were an odd couple, but were more in love than either could imagine. That love, however gave them the surprise of a lifetime! In the fall of their first year at the local University, Alice found herself pregnant. Although it was somewhat of an inconvenience, neither could be happier.
James’ parents offered the support and comfort for the two expecting parents while Alice suffered from being shunned by her own flesh and blood. Alice found herself a nice job as an at home computer technician for Dell while still going to school part time at the community college for a Nursing degree. James still attended the university he got into through his sports scholarship, but did himself well in finding a job for a construction company that was willing to work around his complicated schedule. A few months later, Alice was on her way to the hospital. Derek James Monroe was born on March 28, 1993 in emergency C section for not being in the head down position for regular birth. He was the ultimate joy for both James and Alice, but his life was just about to go downhill. Derek grew up with his parents in a small two bedroom apartment on the bad side of Boston. The once happy couple was starting to show signs of falling out of love. James was postponing their wedding farther and farther every month and going out every night with his college buddies while Alice suffered at home. When Derek turned three, James left and was never heard from again. James’ parents, however were very disappointed in James’ lack of taking responsibility as a father and offered as much support they could for Alice.
She moved back in with her ex boyfriend’s parents, taking up space in the old guestroom. Alice loved Charles and Shirley Monroe as if they were her very own parents and was very generous with her money. They refused to have her pay rent so Alice bought them gifts whenever she could. She once purchased a nice pair of earrings that she saw Shiley admiring for Mother’s Day. And Charles loved anything with a Boston team logo on it, so she always had time to duck into a sports store for a quick gift. Shirley and Charles were always willing to take Derek out to the park on the weekends for some quality grandparents and grandson time to give Alice space for her school work. All that work paid off too because a year later, Alice graduated with flying colors and was able to find a job at the hospital. Derek liked to tag along with his mother to work whenever he could. He had a way with the patients who looked forward to his weekly visits. When Derek was old enough, Charles enrolled him into little league try outs. Derek took it like a fish to water as well as other sports he was introduced to like football, basketball and even soccer. Although, he loved sports Derek had a strong passion for photography. Alice had given him his first camera for his sixth birthday and he used it up in an hour. So he began asking for a camera every time they went to the store, but there was one time when Alice did not have enough money to pay for one. He was only eight and his puppy dog eyes could touch the heart of the most coldest person. So, Alice dropped him home and went back to buy him one, but she never came back. In the early hours of the morning flashing lights swept over the house and the bad news came in the form of two officers. Alice Lang had been killed by a drunk driver on her way home coming from the store.
It took Derek a long while to cope with losing his mother. He didn’t understand, all he knew was that she was sleeping for a very long time and would not wake up. She was in heaven. The last camera his grandparents developed held all pictures of his late mother and he took it as a sign to keep going on without, but she’ll still with him always. When Derek was twelve, his passion for photography began to take up his whole life. He had millions of albums filled with pictures of everything a person could come up with. He had a very special talent. A talent that brought him face to face with his dad who had contacted him for his photos by his boss who worked for the newspaper. Apparently James’ dream of being a pro athlete didn’t work out so well. But, the only his dad offered him was a check. After ripping it up in his face, Derek held nothing, but hatred for his father and admiration for his late mother. The two males never spoke again.
This all seemed to take a toll on him. Derek began hanging out with the wrong crowds. He snuck out of the house, partied, smoked and drank, it was just too much for his grandparents to handle. But, no matter how many bad things he did with his social life, he never once showed this in any school work. His GPA remained above a 3.0. But when Derek came saw a friend come to the brink of losing their life to alcohol poisoning, he changed his ways for the better. Although, he loved his grandparents for everything they did, Derek wanted nothing more than to leave. He found a school that dealt with passion and decided to have an information packet sent. His grandparents looked it all over and even talked with the principal over the phone for verifications and answers to unspecified questions. It would be a good chance for Derek to stretch his wings and learn a few things from the real world. So they agreed and he began attending Gordon Parks at the start of his sophomore year.
ROLE PLAYING SAMPLE
Getting coffee in the morning wasn’t exactly a tradition for Michael, but it meant he had a reason to leave campus. Sometimes he needed a break from the hustle and bustle and that meant just getting into his car, driving to Starbucks and getting coffee he didn’t particularly enjoy. He could have done with some company but there was always the chance that there'd be questions that Michael wasn’t entirely willing to answer. The journey to Starbucks had been largely unexciting, there was hardly any traffic out, he hadn’t even seen anyone he knew that well when he was making his way to his car. That in itself proved that most people had better things to do than go to Starbucks for coffee that they didn’t even want. Michael should have learned to face the problem head on, but he was too much of a coward for that and instead decided to avoid his problems.
When he arrived at Starbucks, he realized why he didn’t like the place. It was too 'coupley' for his liking, maybe that was just his take on it but Michael hated everything feeling like a date. It probably had something to do with his ex girl girlfriend Diana, who was probably off getting some tail from his so called best friend. Michael pretended he didn’t care, but that wasn’t the case. He had been devastated by the news, but refused to show any emotions until he was in the confines of his room. If those four walls could talk, they would have a lot to say. So while he stood in the queue, he knew this would be a coffee to go. Everything about the place seemed so patronizing and superficial but it was the only place he'd actually remembered sold coffee.
