PERSONALITY
Travis is one of the sweetest guys you’ll ever meet. He knows just the right things to say to make you feel better and is the type of person who will drop whatever he is doing in a heartbeat to be there for if he is needed. He’s a very social person, not liking to be left alone for too long and goes out of his way to meet new people that he can form friendships with. His fascination with learning about a person is what makes him appealing to others, he’s usually the first to initiate inquires about the person’s background and their home life, but despite his eagerness to hear about their life story, when the tables are turned on him, he tends to change the subject rather abruptly. His personal life isn’t something he likes to talk about a whole lot. His heart is worn on his sleeve. He holds no shame in expressing his feelings to whoever is willing to listen. If he’s angry he tends to lash out, when he’s upset he’ll sulk up in his room, hiding his emotions isn’t easy for him to do very well.
Travis doesn’t like confrontations. In fact, it’s safe enough to say that he despises them. He finds any type of arguing a turn off and won’t stick around if someone starts to get loud with him. He’ll be the first to apologize if he did - or even if he didn’t do - something wrong just to avoid a fight and will try to settle it as best he can by submission. He as a pessimistic view on everything. He always finds a way to look on the down side of things, thinking that no matter how good something may be, it can always go bad in a second. He’s a diligent worker, finding school to be a breeze. His ability to retain information like a sponge works well for him because he doesn’t really need to study as much. He’s very organized in everything he does, keeping a planner to mark in what assignments are due and such as to not to forget. He spaces time for homework and projects, liking to get them done early and out of the way so he won’t have to worry about it later on.
His experience with girls is far and in between. Despite his sociable nature, Travis never really had a girlfriend. There were small crushes here and there, but nothing enough to be considered all that serious. He had a nerve wrecking encounter with a very forward older girl, but was too drunk to really recall their conversations. The next thing he knew, he woke up in her bed with her rushing him to leave before her parents got home from their vacation. She made it clear that it was only a one time thing. Aside from that his skills with girls is close to nothing. He’s pretty oblivious when it comes to them, usually seeing them as a potential friend before anything more, but his sweet and caring nature tends to draw girls in like a fishing line. Travis doesn’t have a preference to the type of girl he’s attracted to as long as they aren’t loud or likely to cause arguments. He knows that he’s a one girl kind of guy, not really the type to play the field or anything like that.
APPEARANCE
Travis is pretty much all arms and legs being pretty tall for age at 6'2" that his body is having a hard time catching up to his growth spurts. Despite his lean and slender stature, he's hiding some pretty nice muscles under all that clothing from playing sports and taking time out in the gym, but isn’t one to show them off all that often. He may not turn every head in the room, but he’s not a bad looking in the slightest. There is still a boyish look to him, but he’s quickly developing into a handsome young man. He has a squared face with a strong jaw line and piercing, deep brown eyes outlined with thick lashes, slightly hooded by dark eyebrows.
For a guy, Travis has pretty long hair, perhaps not as long as a girls might be, but still long enough that it stops just below his ears. It’s a rich, chestnut color, usually left straight and parted, sometimes unruly with knots if he doesn’t comb it. He takes of it to an extent like washing it and combing it, but that’s about it. As for his clothing style, Travis doesn’t really have one as he usually received hand me downs of button up plaids, graphic tees, denim jeans or cargo shorts. It’s not really something he’s wild about. He could care less about what’s in or out of style as long as he likes it that’s all that matters.
HISTORY
In the summer of 1988 Nancy Somers arrived as volunteer counselor for a sleep away camp in Colorado. It was there she met Dean McCoy and it was safe to say they hit it off almost immediately. They could be seen disappearing into the nature trail or camping in the woods after curfew. After two months of bliss, they exchanged numbers and parted ways. It wasn’t until two weeks that she found out she was pregnant much to the dismay of her parents. When Mark called the morning after she found out, she told him the problem and he downright refused her accusation, hanging up. They never spoke again. Nancy had the child, which was a healthy baby boy who she named Ethan John Somers. She went on to college where she earned a degree in business marketing. It was at a graduation party did she meet Daniel Hunter, a construction worker about six years her senior. Despite the age difference, they began a relationship, one that her parents disproved of. Daniel took to Ethan well and vice versa so after three years they were married. It wasn’t for another two years that she became pregnant and after nine months gave birth to Travis Michael Hunter on May 2, 1994. Travis was a social butterfly growing up. He had a way with charming the ladies and was an extremely social little boy. Adults adored his good mannerisms and cute puppy dog eyes. His thing was being the center of attention and he got it all the time. It was a great contrast to his older brother, Ethan, who was much shyer and closed off, liking to keep to himself and out of the spotlight. Despite their personality differences, Travis always tailed after Ethan like a shadow, spouting praises and proclaiming his adoration he had for his big brother. The limelight Travis shone on Ethan was what the older brother treasured most, basking in the attention his little brother gave him that no one else really did. They were pretty much two peas in a pod, partners in crime and though they got along, there was still the teasing, the pranks and all the other stuff that came with being siblings. In elementary school, Travis took part in a small kindergarten production of ‘Hansel and Gretel’ and he took it very seriously. He studied his few lines over and over, begging his mother to help him practice whenever she was free from work. It seemed that enjoyed his time on stage, acting and stealing the show from the many laughs and chortles he pulled from his audience on his own. Nancy thought that maybe a few acting classes would do him some good.
Those acting classes, however had to be put on hold as Daniel lost his job. With money running low and creditors hounding Daniel’s ass, he made the decision to move out of the dream two story home he brought for his family to a small two bedroom apartment. Slowly, but surely Daniel sunk into depression, turning to alcohol as some means of escape. It soon became a regular occurrence for Travis’ father to come home a drunk mess being obnoxious, violent and demanding. The first time he hit Nancy was just the beginning of the nightmare. It didn’t take long before his violent out lashes turned onto Ethan. Fortunately, Travis was never around long enough to receive such treatment from his dad. He was completely unaware of the abuse to his mother and brother and was easily satisfied with the lame excuses when he questioned their bruises. He was never left alone with Daniel Hunter even if the man cherished him more so because he was his legitimate son, but Ethan didn’t want take any chances with his little brother being in danger of getting such treatment. And Ethan’s protective big brother instincts were right because late one night, eight year old Travis woke up a little after midnight to use the bathroom. And guess who walked through the front door? When wild, red tinged eyes locked onto Travis who was just about to head back to the room he shared with Ethan, it was inevitable. Travis went down from the harsh shove and took a back slap to the face before suffering a few blows to the abdomen. The wails of the youngest, alerted the rest of the household. Nancy dealt with Daniel while Ethan took Travis back to their room. Travis couldn’t stop crying about the incident and tried to apologize for whatever he did, but his sibling simply pulled him close, telling him none of this was his fault and that nothing bad would happen to him as long as big brother was around.
It still did not prevent Travis from getting smacked around a bit from time to time. With Nancy pretending that nothing was going on and heading off to work, coming back odd hours, Ethan soon became Travis’ primary caregiver. Travis always looked to Ethan for anything as if his older brother was a parental figure instead of a sibling, an equal. He learned everything from his older brother, trying to copy him and be just as cool because that’s just how much he looked up to him. He felt safest with his big brother and that’s all that mattered. Things went from bad to good in one day. Travis was sick with a cold and so Ethan decided to skip school to watch over him. During this time, Daniel came home, the angriest he’d ever been as if the devil himself were possessing him and seeing the two kids home when they should be at school grabbed hold of a knife. Nancy would never prepare herself for the sight she walked into. Her oldest son standing over in front of Travis, who was crying hysterically, protecting him from a steak knife being held by her husband. That’s when everything hit her. She snuck up behind her husband and hit him over the head with an alcohol bottle she brought before gathering her sons into her arms, crying and telling them how sorry she was for taking this long to do something about their situation. Nancy called the police and Daniel was taken into custody, his family testifying against him - young Travis bursting into tears during his confession on the stand - and sentenced to life in prison with no parole. Nancy got herself together, packing their bags and moving to Ohio, the state she grew up in and made a new life there, away from the bad memories of Daniel Hunter. Travis was put into therapy along with his older brother and eventually were able to put their tragic past to rest. It could no longer hurt him. He wasn’t exactly happy about the new man, his mother started seeing just two years later, taking a dislike to him and his young daughter, Amanda immediately. Matthew Jacobs was his name and he was an ex marine working as a postal worker, having met his mother on his daily route. He was rough around the edges with a no care attitude and although wasn’t exactly mean, he ruled with an ironed fist.
Nancy and Matthew married immediately that fall, a small ceremony of just immediate family and friends. Travis kept his distance from his new step father, not trusting him in the slightest and walking on eggshells whenever he was around. He kept close to his older brother at all times, becoming a pesky second shadow, but his sibling never called him out on it, in which Travis was thankful as to not having to explain himself. Matthew was a loud man and his daughter - or stepsister, whatever- Amanda was a snobbish brat. He made sure to keep out of their way as he had a slight phobia of being in the middle of an argument or loud shouting. He focused all of his attention on school after Ethan went off to college on a basketball scholarship Ohio State. It was hard for Travis to let him go because if felt like a part of him was missing, but he was able to come to terms with it. He was an exceptionally bright kid and was even more amazing when he was on stage. The school had a drama club, where he excelled, loving the spotlight and the positive attention he got from his watching audience. He was in a number of school productions, sometimes playing a main character or a minor character. It was something he really found that he loved. His mother attended every performance and his brother always called to wish him luck before a show as means of support. Nancy enrolled him in acting classes like she had planned to when he was younger. The teacher saw the potential Travis had and suggested that he start going for auditions for movie roles and such, but that’s not what Nancy wanted. So, slightly disappointed, the acting coach kept up the classes with an eager Travis and instead told Travis about an Arts school that had a very good theatre program. Nancy decided to check out the school and liking what she heard and saw thought it would be a nice change for Travis, who was all for it just to get away from his home.
ROLE PLAYING SAMPLE
Derek wasn’t sure what to make of the situation he inadvertently put himself in. Of course this whole thing had been his idea, but he didn’t expect for it to actually work. This wasn’t a date, Vanessa had made that known right off the bat as she had a boyfriend. Although, that little detail never really stopped him before. He’d seen her with that kid and quite frankly he found him to be a little puny for a girl like her. There’s nothing to be afraid of when it came to that aspect, but he doubted that he would fight over a girl that hadn’t been his to begin with. When he met Vanessa in the park for the first time, she had his attention right away. They didn’t exactly hit off so well seeing as he was never able to keep his foot out of his mouth long enough to get her phone number. Speaking what was on his mind before actually thinking about it made him come off as a jerk to most who didn’t know him so well, but he really was a softie at heart. That’s what happens when you’re raised by your grandparents.
He was hoping that this date - no, not date - outing would help him get to know Vanessa better. Why he’d been so intent on finding out she was after their first meeting in the park was beyond him, but he just went with it. Derek had his little flings here and there, but it never went on long enough for him fall in love with the girl. If there was anything he enjoyed though, it was a game of cat and mouse. He loved a good chase and though she had shot him down, the girl had still agreed to go on a date - no, not a date - excursion, for lack of a better word. The animal shelter hadn’t sounded so appealing when she suggested it. He was thinking they could have caught a movie or gone to like the zoo or something, but he took what he could get. If she enjoyed doing this volunteering stuff then he figured maybe he’d ought to get a feel for it too. Derek stood outside of the shelter, taking in the last puff of his cigarette when he saw Vanessa round the corner a little ways down the street before putting it out in the ash tray by the garbage tin. “Hey,” he said as she got closer.
