PERSONALITY
Marissa is an outgoing girl. She has the natural ability of making new friends and becoming friends with those she hasn’t gotten acquainted to yet. But, just like any other normal person she enjoys her alone time, often going for a stroll outside. She has a deep fondness for walking, preferring it to any other use of transportation like buses or cabs. Being out in the sunshine and in the fresh air is where she is most comfortable. She finds it a good way to mull over her thoughts and solve her problems as she isn’t one to rely on other who try to offer a help or their opinions. Marissa finds that her issues are her own and doesn’t really like the idea of burdening anyone with them. Being raised by a single father, she was pretty much taught to fend for herself and to be strong, independent person from the start. She still maintains a level of exuberance that some might find a bit overwhelming, but her outlook on life is to just go with the flow. There shouldn’t be any directed road until you start traveling it.
Admittedly, Marissa wouldn’t call herself a daddy’s girl as her and her father aren’t necessarily close. Sometimes, she feels as if her father resents her due to his lack of interest in her life. Despite it, Marissa remains an optimistic, looking to the future and hoping it’ll get brighter. She’s a little quirky, usually cracking jokes and causing a laugh amongst her friends. She has a spontaneous streak often coming out of the blue with ideas or doing something completely random. Her charm is what most people find the most appealing about her which often gets her what she wants or needs. But, however, funny she may be, Marissa is far from graceful, but not as far as she trips and falls every other hour. She can hold her own for at least day or two before an incident happens. Her lack of attentiveness is what gets her into trouble. She’s oblivious to everyone and everything around her and only focuses on what’s going on in front her.
When it comes to school, there is nothing more important to her. Although, she does have a habit of procrastinating to the last minute as she doesn’t really understand the concept of studying so many pages and words and notes. It always came so easy for her. Marissa figures she could do something with that and give tutoring lessons, liking to teach others and has even been considering a career in that field. When it comes to the opposite sex, Marissa doesn’t have a problem functioning around them. It’s when she has a crush on a boy is when a problem makes itself known. She turns into a stuttering and clumsy person, her jokes usually carrying the conversation. She had been clueless on the mechanics of it all as her father was not the person to go to. Her father was overprotective and expected her to believe the stork story when she was twelve. Her eighth grade gym teacher took it upon herself to take a semester to teach sexual education and that’s where she pretty much learned the birds and the bees and all that. It was amazing how she got through her menstrual as her father about nearly freaked when she told him about it.
APPEARANCE
Marissa was often called the pretty little island girl with ridiculously long hair. It now flows just a bit passed her shoulders after a trip to the hair salon for a cut in beautiful waves brown. She usually keeps it straight or sometimes in loose curls for a different look. Her eyes are a beautiful dark brown, a trait that she gets strongly from her father that swirl with easy to read emotions. Pout lips that break into a dazzling smile that is much too hard for her to hide. She has lovely bronze toned skin and aside from her eyes, takes after her deceased mother in appearance
Standing a few inches taller than five foot three, Marissa is a bit on the short side. It’s not a trait she particularly likes, but has come to learn to accept it. Her body is slimmed and toned despite the fact that she doesn’t do much exercise apart from walking to one place to another. It comes down to her fast metabolism that gives her the image of a slender frame, which most girls would kill for. Marissa doesn’t entirely like the idea of dressing up. For her, it’s all about comfort. She’d much rather thrown on a pair of shorts or jeans with nice top while she rocks her rather oversized collection of flip flops and sandals.
HISTORY
Alana Choy grew up in Oahu, Hawaii with six older brothers and sisters. She attended New York University for a degree in business while working at the downtown Starbucks. It was there where she met Lucas Evans, who fell for her on sight. They played a little cat and mouse chase until they went on a first date and made their relationship official. She didn’t finish her school as her scholarship was taken away due low GPA so Alana went back to Hawaii with her boyfriend, Lucas in tow. Needless to say the family was not happy. Not really wanting to go back, Lucas and her agreed to stay and settle in Hawaii for awhile. They married a few months later and after a year gave birth to beautiful little Marissa Leilani Evans on June 26, 1995. With no support from her family, Lucas wanted to move and four years later they picked up and went to Florida, which was a debate in itself. Marissa was a bit of a handful once she hit her two year mark. She did a complete one-eighty and started working on a bad behavior streak. She didn’t listen to her parents and often went off exploring on her own. Always wanting to be the cent of their attention, little Marissa never gave them any privacy or time to talk with neighbors and friends as she had a habit of interrupting. Her idea of a fun time was running around while her parents chased her and talking back to them. The behavior didn’t improve over time and the two new parents were in over their head, not knowing how to handle the situation. Fortunately, a regular customer of the café they ran in downtown Miami offered her aide as she specialized in child psychology to help Lucas and Alana tame their young wild child. It took a bit of work, but with time outs and strict rules and proper scolding young Marissa started to shape up. By age seven, she knew what was expected of her and knew how to express her herself better when she wanted or needed something. Her manners changed and her behavior towards her parents became respectful as every child should have towards their providing parents.
The small family happiness was good while it lasted, but when the café started going out of business, things started to heat up between Lucas and Alana. They slowly started to have arguments that escalated in volume, leaving Marissa scared and vulnerable. She tried to make things better, but without meaning to their anger often turned onto the young girl. Not physically, but emotionally telling her that they were busy or to go find someone else to play with or that what she had to do or show wasn’t important. Marissa felt neglected and started going to her babysitter’s house, which she was often left at on a daily basis. The teen babysitter and her had a special bond, she taught her the piano and to sing simple songs. Those songs meant a lot to Marissa and as time progressed her ability to sing became exceptionally better. She loved music, usually knowing the words to every lyrics played on the radio and often singing them in Ah-Cappella very nicely, hitting every note. Despite how amazing singing made her feel, it couldn’t help with the tragedy that struck next. Marissa’s mother had been experiencing constant migrained over the last few years, but didn’t think it was much to worry about. It wasn’t until she slowly started to feel disoriented, and loss of feeling in certain parts of her body or constant drowsiness. After she went into a seizure and was taken into the hospital is when the family found out. Alana Evans had an enlarged tumor growing in her brain. Marissa dropped out of school and took up education with home schooling that a former regular customer of a café offered he heard of their situation. With two surgeries and constant radiation treatment, there was nothing to be done as it kept coming back. Alana died that year before Christmas after given five months life expectancy. That’s when her and Marissa began to bond often going to movies or shopping or simply spending time with each other. Lucas was distraught, but remained strong for his women.
After the death of Alana, Marissa’s father closed in on himself and decided for a change of scenery moving to his home state of New York. They resided there to the dismay of Marissa and Lucas found a mechanic job at a local garage. It was summer so not having a baby sister and his family living in Rhode Island, Lucas often took Marissa to work with him. It was there she learned the workings of cars and machines. That was the only time father and daughter spent any amount of time with each other. If she came home with a problem or was in tears, he’d tell her to suck it up and deal with it. No comfort, no guidance, just brief directions on how to handle it. When he enrolled her into middle school, he expected straight A’s and many activities preferably sports. So, feeling pressured to make her father happy, Marissa joined the softball and volleyball teams. Yet, he never showed up to games or practices. He always told her he was too busy as he ended up taking up three jobs to support them. Marissa ended up doing the cleaning, the laundry, the cooking and all the other things that was expected of her since no one else was there to do it. She even took up a weekend job as a dog walker to help herself with cash so she wouldn’t have to go to her father when she needed something for school. But, Marissa managed to keep them both happy with her jokes and silliness that her father found appealing about his daughter. She could make him laugh regardless of the day he had. Marissa juggled school, work, activities and housework everyday and was starting to feel stressed out over her it all.
The only outlet she had was singing, which she often did around the house, belting out lyrics with an amazing voice to keep herself entertained. One time she even put on a show for her father who had a thing for the Beatles and performed their songs on his day, which was Sunday. He was flabbergasted at the talent she had and figuring this was something his daughter seemed to enjoy, he started to look up on schools online. Lucas noticed how overworked Marissa was and felt a little guilty, thinking of all she has done especially for him. Marissa was everything to him, she was his little girl and she was missing her childhood. This is when she should be having fun, not spending her time worrying over bills and work. He found a school a few states away in Missouri called Gordon Parks. So, he called up the number on the website and explained his situation. With her good grades, Marissa was eligible for a full ride scholarship since he really didn’t have the money. He applied online for her, hoping to surprise her if she got an acceptance letter. The day it came, he handed it to her and she opened it with a bit of hesitance. After she read it over, Marissa was ecstatic, this was something she wanted and they talked over the distance. As long as she called and visited on Holidays, it was all okay. That was the first time they ever had a heart to heart and Marissa treasures to this day.
ROLE PLAYING SAMPLE
Sarah definitely liked being at the academy much better than the public schools she attended back home. She automatically felt a sense of belonging the moment she arrived. Being here was like a breath of fresh air. There was definitely a lot more freedom here than she expected, but it was nice. She was able to do what she wanted, when she wanted and there wasn’t anyone to tell her otherwise. It gave her a sense of power and independence that she didn’t really have at home with her helicopter parents. They had practically packed her bags for her, wanting to do what was best for their daughter, even if it meant her living and going to another school for a better part of the year. Sarah felt the need to leave home to get a better grasp of her life and to get away from those who had hurt her deeply. She didn’t know anyone and they didn’t know here. It was a brand new slate and that was exactly how she wanted it. As much as she liked it here, Sarah admittedly felt a bit homesick after by the end of the week. That was quickly settled after last night’s phone call to her parents and another to her older brother.
Saturday couldn’t have come sooner. The first week of classes had flown by and she already had homework assignments sitting on her desk in the corner. She had every intention of completing at least half the workload today, but she had been so tired from staying up late into the night, chatting up her brother that she ended up oversleeping. Instead, Sarah had the sudden urge head down to the dance room and practice. It was still homework in her book. Changing into tights and her leotard, she slipped on her dance shoes, threw on an oversized tshirt to cover herself and grabbed her bag before leaving the dorm. She walked briskly down the halls, avoiding eye contact with anyone and soon found herself in the main building where the dance classrooms were located. Pulling open the door, Sarah walked inside, dropped her duffle by the wall and peeled off the oversized shirt she had thrown on, crouching down to stuff it in her bag. As she began to tie back her hair with a hair band from the zipper pocket, she stood up to look in one of the many panel of mirrors that covered one side of the wall and finally took notice of a guy stretching out his legs.“Oh,”Sarah spoke as she stopped her motions and turned to face his direction fully,“I’m sorry, I didn’t think anyone was in here.”she said softly and bent down to pick up her things.
