PERSONALITY
Amanda, known to her closest friends as Mands, is a very outgoing girl. She's always talking to someone new, always getting involved in some stranger's conversation, constantly making new connections. Never tiring of the process of being introduced to new people, who tend to take to her because of her winning smile, easy laugh and genuine compliments. Though, don't get it in your head that she's a people pleaser because she isn't. Yes, she believes in telling people good things about themselves and making good first impressions, but she's no doormat. Although she's never eager to burn a bridge, she isn't the type to change herself or water anything down just to make other people happy. If someone has a genuine problem with something, then she'll go ahead and not say or do something in front of them, but if people just don't like what she does or says or wears, well that's on them and not her. She'd never change who she was, even in the most simple ways, to make someone else happy. Yes, she loves new people and old friends alike, but who she is isn't to be sacrificed for someone else's comfort.
It can be faulted that Mands is a bit of a flirt. Or, okay, a lot of a flirt. Why shouldn't she be though? Flirting never hurt anyone, and it's not like she went around flirting with people already in relationships - unless, of course, she didn't know that they were in a relationship. Or, maybe, it should be better phrased as she never consciously flirts with anyone in a relationship. Flirting to her, is pretty much second nature. Perhaps from her mixture of compliments and natural charm. It is rare that she doesn't get what she wants, between her smile and charming ways, people are usually willing enough to agree with what she wants. It usually doesn't bother her to be turned down though because the things that she really wants, she doesn't chase with charm and smile but hard work and determination. And okay, maybe a bit of charm and a flash of her smile. It never hurt her to play up a bit of charm every now and then when going after something that she truly wants. Not that she's afraid of hard work or anything, obviously, but like most people, she'd never say no to having things be a bit easier.
Given her nature, it isn't uncommon for people to underestimate her, whether it be her brains or her determination. It never minds her to prove others wrong though and even if her temper is usually a bit more on the mild side, nothing can anger her faster than people who don't take her seriously. When she does get angry, she gets very passive aggressive toward the people that she's mad at. It's not on purpose, it's just the kind of defense that she developed growing up. Besides that, when she's really upset, it's easy to find her in the music rooms perfecting a song on any instrument that she can play for hours at a time until the feelings go away. And although not being taken seriously tends to make her angry, it also drives her to do more. To push harder and prove any neighsayers wrong about her, or maybe, to prove to herself that she's the person that she thinks herself to be. Sure, she's confident in herself, but she never denies that the fact that as a young teen she'll be growing and changing for years to come and never wants to be the one standing in the way of those changes.
Despite her flirty, charming nature, Amanda isn't the type of person to just go ahead and hook up with everyone she flirts with. If she did, she'd have been having much more sex than she'd ever want. However, that doesn't mean that she doesn't have fun with people that she flirts with more than casually and that she's interested in. Her fun usually just takes place as make-out sessions that usually stop right around second base. Actually, despite the numerous people whose lips have met her own in rather heated measures, she's never had sex. While making out was something fun and nice, it was still very casual in a lot of ways to her. Meanwhile, to have sex, it would be a much bigger deal to her. Her interest is pretty equally divided between the two genders, being attracted to whoever without thinking about it. It's always been that way too, finding herself equally drawn to boys or girls without a common type between them. As is probably to be expected, she's never had a real serious relationship. It's not that she's scared of a relationship. But she's only 15 and she would have to find someone she really thought was special to want to date seriously so young. If the right person came along, she'd be happy to settle in with them.
APPEARANCE
Amanda is a pretty girl and she knows it. Practically the stereotypical American sweetheart, with her long and soft blonde hair, green (though sometimes appearing blue) eyes framed by long eyelashes, full lips and a dimple to complete the picture. Her smile is wide, with straight white teeth from braces in elementary school. She's got a pale complexion and burns rather than tans, so during the summer she is rarely seen without sunscreen on hand to apply and fight the burns that easily turn her pale skin into an angry red color. Besides the burning, the only part of her appearance that she doesn't enjoy too much is her nose, which she always figures is slightly out of place and really just not all that cute. Besides that though, the 5'2", 108 pound teen feels very comfortable in her skin. She's thin, with curves enough to keep herself and apparently others happy, but does usually try to go jogging a couple of times a week to stay in shape.
Her wardrobe contains many clothes from slightly more expensive stores and her taste in clothes tends to be with the trends. Despite that, she still owns a few t-shirts and pairs of jeans. But they are the rarity among the many nicer tops, skirts, dresses and pants that call her closet home. Usually she tends to accessorize her outfits with a couple of things, whether it be jewelry, bags, scarves or hair pieces, her look never quite feels complete without the extra couple of pieces. Her closet might actually be one of the most organized places in her room, with things sorted perfectly by category to help her morning routine go by quicker.
As for make-up and other cosmetics, Mands is definitely a user of them, but was taught from a young age that less is more and therefore always tries to live by that rule. Sticking to more simple and neutral colors for most of the time, with the exception of some bolder colors for special occasions. Despite that, she's got a wide array of beauty products organized in the bathroom and does insist on using them each day.
HISTORY
Mary-Beth Black met her future husband, Richard Cline in a most unusual circumstance. A medical intern at the time Mary-Beth ended up finding herself in the presence of young business lawyer Richard Cline, when he came into the hospital with a burst appendix. Not exactly the picture perfect romance, or the situation in which most people dream about finding their soul mate, but it was how they met nonetheless. After the surgery, in which Mary-Beth had scrubbed in on, she went with the attending to check up on him. The first thing he said when she walked in, was that she was the most beautiful person he'd ever seen and then asked if she was the angel of Heaven coming to take him away. Nonetheless, Mary-Beth giggled, turned a nice shade of pink and shook her head before telling Mr. Cline that he was, to directly quote, doped up on enough pain meds to make anyone look like an angel. They'd gone ahead and filled him in on how the surgery had went and assured him that he was going to be fine and he was. Which was why, when he came back to the hospital a week later with flowers most everyone was confused, but he asked Mary-Beth on a date nonetheless. At first she rejected him and when he came back, rejected him again (how could you date someone whose organs you'd literally touched?) but on the third time he came back she relented and decided to go out with him.
So that was how Mary-Beth said yes to Richard and a first date turned to a second, which quickly turned to a third at which things had quickly turned around. Not for the two of them in their attraction or their feelings, but it was on the third date that their first and only child would be conceived. Given her hectic schedule as a hospital intern, Mary-Beth was used to having spotty periods which skipped months, which was why it took her until she reached the fourth month of pregnancy. At that point, she went ahead and shared the news with Richard, unsure of what they were going to do. After long discussions, in which they weighed all the different options they might do. Despite their young relationship, the couple decided that they were going to end up keeping the baby that was growing inside of the medical intern. It wasn't the easiest thing in their lives, since they both had very demanding jobs but somehow they made it work and by the time that they welcomed young, Amanda Eloise Cline, in the early morning of April 2nd, 1996, the parents had actually grown to be quite in love with each other.
It was difficult for Mary-Beth to decide to take her full maternity leave, given that she'd already spent so much time of her interning career catering toward Amanda, but she ended up doing it anyway. Once she went back to work, the young couple hired a live in nanny to be around all the time. It wasn't that they ignored their daughter, or that they didn't want to be with her, but with their busy schedules they wanted someone consistent in her life. Amanda never minded either, since she so obviously had all three of the adults wrapped around her cute little finger from day one. Each of them doted on her and always complimented her, while making sure to keep her grounded. When it was decided that she'd start school, she immediately went into private school and after school was encouraged by her parents to take up some sort of after school activity. What she decided, at the young age of 6, to take up was music. Her parents both approved as they themselves each knew how to play different musical instruments. After carefully listening to all the different instruments that she could chose to learn, Amanda was instantly taken by the cello.
A difficult instrument, but she took to it well. Finding that she seemed to have a natural talent with keeping rhythm. And so music became one of Amanda's favorite things, the lessons becoming something that she loved to look forward to and the recitals that she went to and preformed at making her shine. Fearing of growing stagnant, she started to ask for lessons on other stringed instruments as she got older. Eager to learn all the different things that she could play and picking them up easier than most. As she grew older, so did her passion for music and to learn as much of it as she could as well as improve herself as much as she could. Given that her parents never saw her academic life or social life suffer - Amanda always seemed to have some friend or another spending the night - they enthusiastically encouraged this interest as much as they could. One of them always taking the time out of their schedules to make sure that they were there to see any performances that she had and always taping it so that the whole family could sit down and watch the final result together.
Hitting middle school, Amanda became determined that she was going to find an art academy to go to for her high school education. Music was what she loved most and although she had lots of friends and they were pretty much some of the most important things in her life at that age, she knew that she aimed higher. Knew that although she'd been playing the cello since she was six, had learned to pick up violin, guitar and bass, it wasn't enough to just be alone in her private lessons. She wanted a challenge and she wanted the best to teach her, not that she didn't love her teacher. When she approached her parents with the idea, finally, upon entering 8th grade, she'd already picked five different schools that she'd read up on and liked the most. Though her parents were saddened by the idea of their daughter going away - none of the schools were located close enough to their Indianapolis, Indiana home for their liking - they saw how passionate their daughter was about this and supported her because of it. Just as it had always been, her parents switched off on duties of touring the different schools with her. Taking notes, pictures and everything else to share with the other when they came back.
To be honest, Gordon Parks' wasn't Amanda's top choice. Oh, she knew it was an amazing school and that she'd be lucky to study there, but another one had seemed to mesh better with her ideals of what a school should be. Not to mention that it was located in the very sunny, very warm, very beachy, California and that was a big plus in her book opposed to Gordon Parks' located in the middle of the country. However, after a long discussion with both her parents, including several pro-con lists, they decided that Gordon Parks' would be the best fit for their daughter and should be top choice. So, she applied to the top three (the California school still in the running) and had auditions at all of them. Weeks later, she heard back with acceptances from all. As agreed upon, she accepted the one to Gordon Parks' (to round out her education the most) and in the fall she hopped on a plane, kissed her parents goodbye and made her way to Kansas City for her first year at the Academy.
