She couldn't help but laugh a bit when she saw the confused look on his face after her comment, figuring he was probably a bit shocked to her reaction, especially if she was right as to why he'd called her appearance nice instead of any other word, which was most likely in order not to offend her, as though any kind of words could offend her anymore. She'd heard a lot worse than hot, and anyway she considered that to be a compliment, not an insult. Besides, bitch and whore where usually higher up on the list of comments she got, and she didn't even feel angry or anything anymore when she heard them. People could think whatever they wanted about her, it wouldn't change who she was or how she acted. Nothing could do that, at least she was pretty sure of that. So it might not necessarily be true at the end of the day because who knew how things would turn out, maybe someday she'd find someone who'd manage changing her completely or at least make her a bit easier to live with, but at that point in her life, she found it very doubtful and she didn't even like the thought of it anyway. Why would she want to change when she'd just gotten used herself to who she was? Anyway, she didn't really think anyone would even bother to attempt changing her at this point.
She followed him inside the gym and looked around without much feeling or anything, unlike all the other students who'd been slightly surprised or at least pleased at the sight of it. She'd seen more, of course, and she'd been to so many formal events by now this one was just another to add to the list. The only difference was that she'd actually decided on her own to come here with Joel, though she wasn't really sure why, but still she had and it was her own decision, not her parents', not anybody else's. She wasn't sure how much she'd enjoy it still, but she at least planned on not being completely bored out of her mind. That was a pretty good goal to achieve she thought, and besides, Joel wasn't that bad. He was a nice guy, quite attractive too, and he didn't seem to judge her the way other people did. When he asked her whether she wanted to dance now or later, she shrugged lightly and looked around at those who were dancing and those who were sitting, figuring the latter seemed a lot more bored than the others who actually looked to be enjoying themselves. "Now sounds fine," she said. "If you're up to it," she added, shrugging once more.
